MARQUEZ FAVOURITE FOR 2026 TITLE AFTER MISANO TRIUMPH
Marc Marquez is top of the 2026 MotoGP world title standings for the first time this season.
The 33-year-old Ducati rider was once 102 points behind top spot after weeks away with injury, following a loose screw in his shoulder preventing him from controlling his bike sufficiently well.
However, since his return, he has become the man in form once more, and completed a 37-point double-victory weekend at Grand Prix San Marino.
This time, Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia held onto the lead at turn one, but gave up his involvement in the race on lap one, as he slid out into the gravel.
From there, Marquez took the lead, but Jorge Martin quickly displaced him as leader as he progressed from fifth on the grid.
Briefly, it appeared that Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini) would usurp his brother, but instead the current world champion rallied, took back the lead, and both Alex and Pedro Acosta then attacked Martin as they claimed second and third, respectively.
The result meant that Marquez ended the weekend top of the standings, and favourite for the 2026 title once again.

'NEVER GIVE UP' - MARC MARQUEZ CELEBRATES
He says: ”Unreal, it feels unreal. Never give up. I will push until the end. This is not done, but this is not over.
”In the championship, fighting against very good riders, especially Martin and Bezz. But we see today we are fighting at the limit and a small mistake can cost a lot of points. After the Bezzecchi mistake I was a bit too confident and Martin attacked me, but then I regained confidence and maintained my pace.
”Happy because 37 points at Misano means a lot.”

'ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK' - ALEX MARQUEZ ON SECOND PLACE
He told TNT Sports: "Super nice. I thought after yesterday's qualy P9 that we'd thrown away the whole weekend. But I had the speed, the feeling I started to attack, attack and attack. Marc is difficult to attack because his last sector is unbelievable, but the rest, I was able to defend and keep the lap time until the end."

'WE HAVE TO BE HAPPY'- ACOSTA AFTER THIRD PLACE
Pedro Acosta said: ”It's clear that the motivation doesn't go away. At the end, I was pushing the other guys. I was super angry. I was saying, 'Buddy, if you give me what I need, I will do it.'
”The bike was working quite good, still missing a bit in the fast sectors but anyway, we have to be happy. The boys deserve it.”

MARQUEZ REMAINS THE CLEAR BEST
Seven surgeries - he would be unbeatable, presumably, if he had never suffered the original injury.

MARC MARQUEZ WINS GRAND PRIX SAN MARINO
Marc Marquez goes top of the leaderboard and is now favourite for the world title, after a season of struggle with injury, form and fitness. A superb comeback, but far from his first, for the Spaniard.

3 LAPS TO GO
Marc goes fastest of the front three, and it seems - for now - as if he's doing just enough to get this over the line.

4 LAPS TO GO
Alex continues to lurk but he is not yet close enough to force a move.

5 LAPS TO GO
Marquez leads his brother but there's no real panic here - but the lead is getting whittled away. Pedro Acosta is up to third, and he may be closing in for a big old tussle.

LAP 21/27
Marquez is going to take maximum points for the weekend unless he loses his focus. He seems content to maintain a decent enough lead over his brother, but it's 0.6s now, so it could be interesting. Marc sees the gap on the display, and may respond.

LAP 19/27
The gap narrows marginally between the brothers. After the early action, not much is at stake imminently.

LAP 17/27
Marquez is stretching his lead away from his brother and looks entirely comfortable. Alex then had a minor wobble on a curb, but he wrestles successful. Acosta has taken Martin, and Aldegeur is there, looking.
