MARC MARQUEZ CLOSES IN ON CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE WITH ASSEN WIN
Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) won his 68th MotoGP race after a defensive masterclass secured him victory in the Grand Prix Netherlands.
The six-time world champion extended his advantage in this year’s standings to 68 points as main challenger and brother Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) crashed out.
Marc Marquez only qualified fourth fastest following two crashes in practice which left the Spaniard in pain.
However, he came racing through to win Saturday’s Sprint race and repeated his heroics in the Grand Prix.
Pole setter Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) had a nightmare in both races and crashed out of the Sprint and struggled to keep pace in the Grand Prix, finishing 10th.
Francesco Bagnaia had the early lead but was unable to fend off his team-mate Marquez as the overall leader took first position.
As Marquez took the lead Alex Marquez collided with Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) with the former crashing out and breaking his finger.
As Bagnaia lost his momentum Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) was the closest challenger to Marquez but was unable to pass the overall leader.
Marquez finished quickly to seal his 68th career MotoGP victory, while Bezzecchi was a close second.
Bagnaia overcame Acosta in the battle for the final podium position.
MotoGP continues in two weeks’ time with round 11, the Grand Prix of Germany.

THIRD PLACE WAS ‘MAXIMUM’ SAID BAGNAIA
Francesco Bagnaia said that his third place finish at Assen was the ‘maximum’ after struggling to hold the top three.
"It’s bitter-sweet," Bagnaia told TNT Sports.
"I wanted to do more like always, but I was struggling again. The pace was not that bad, I tried to close the gap to the first two riders.
"Sometimes I was a bit closer, but I was struggling quite a bit. Third place was the maximum once again and we need to take the positives. It was a good weekend and we need to move on like this."
