MARQUEZ CLAIMS MARVELLOUS MAXIMUM AT MUGELLO
Six-time MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez extended his lead at the top of the MotoGP world championship by claiming a maximum points haul with victory at the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello.
Marquez had already claimed his 100th pole position on the Friday, then won Saturday’s sprint race to make him the clear favourite ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix.
And after going elbow-to-elbow with his factory Ducati teammate Pecco Bagnaia and his brother Alex Marquez in a thrilling skirmish in the opening laps, Marquez eventually pulled clear and controlled the gap to claim his fifth Grand Prix win of the year.
Both Marquez and Bagnaia made excellent starts, and battled back and forth through the opening laps as they swapped positions, and even banged fairings, as the pair jockeyed for the lead during a spectacular start to the race.
Alex Marquez kept pace with them, and got involved in the battle himself as he passed both of the factory bikes to briefly take the lead. But it didn’t take long for Marc to pass his brother and establish a solid gap that he never surrendered as he controlled the race all the way to the chequered flag.
Alex took second, just ahead of a surging Fabio Di Giannantonio, who pushed hard to close the gap to Bagnaia, then passed him in the closing moments to secure an emotional podium finish on home soil.
Marquez’s victory, along with his sprint win, ensured he took a maximum 37 points from the race weekend in Italy, and extended his championship lead over Alex to 40 points. Bagnaia’s hopes of closing the gap, meanwhile, ended in disappointment as he finished off the podium, and 110 points adrift of his teammate.

BAGNAIA ‘GAINED HONOUR’ BY BATTLING MARQUEZ AT MUGELLO
The race ultimately didn’t go his way, but former world champion Pecco Bagnaia’s thrilling fight with Marc Marquez in the opening laps of the Italian Grand Prix earned him plenty of respect, said TNT Sports experts Michael Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli.
The Italian eventually fell to fourth place but was lively in a thrilling start and both Laverty and Guintoli praised him for his early-race performance, with the Italian "leaving it all out there" in his bid to take the fight to Marquez.

DI GIANNANTONIO OVERJOYED WITH MUGELLO PODIUM
A delighted Fabio Di Giannantonio produced a brilliant second half of the race to secure third place, and a spot on the podium, at his home race at Mugello.
Chatting in parc ferme after his memorable ride, "Digi" said he had to give himself a pep-talk before launching the attack on Pecco Bagnaia that led to him claiming third at the Italian Grand Prix.
"I was on the limit. But the laps were going down and I was in P4," he said.
"I knew I had to risk a lot to catch him. But the last lap, I said, ‘OK, let’s go for it! Let’s do whatever!’
"My first podium in MotoGP, at Mugello, in front of these fantastic fans. I love you guys, I love the energy. It’s fantastic to make the podium here."

VICTORIOUS MARQUEZ HAILS ‘AMAZING WEEKEND’
Marc Marquez was understandably delighted with his weekend after securing maximum points at Mugello with victory at the Italian Grand Prix.
Talking in parc ferme after his victory, he shared his instant reaction as he claimed win number 93 in Grand Prix racing, after claiming his 100th pole position yesterday.
"Amazing feeling," he grinned.
"The red color today was not there. Ducati red. But it was a Ducati track, a Ducati day, and three Ducatis on the podium. To win here with the red colour, I already understand this morning. That was super special for them, and even for me, because I feel part of them."
Marquez then spoke about the race itself, and revealed that, despite the fairing bashing that took place at the start of the race, he was keeping something in reserve until it was time to get the hammer down and pull clear of the pack to secure the victory.
"Super happy," he said.
"We managed the race in the beginning. Pecco and Alex … they attacked me. But I was passionate, I was calm, and then when the tyres dropped a bit, I started to give everything, and I’m happy to take 37 points in this amazing weekend."

IT'S A MARQUEZ 1-2
Alex Marquez takes second, just ahead of a charging Fabio Di Giannantonio in third.
"Digi" will have wished the race was a lap or two longer, as his pace looked good enough to overhaul Marquez for second, but the Italian ran out of laps and will have to content himself with third.
Pecco Bagnaia finishes fourth, and that'll be viewed as a disaster. He battled hard at the start of the race, and it looked like he'd be a real threat to Marc Marquez for the win, but he eventually fell off the pace and eventually ended up bumped off the podium spots by compatriot Di Giannantonio.

WIN 93 FOR NUMBER 93!
Marc Marquez claims the victory in Mugello to claim his 93rd Grand Prix win to match the number on the front of his Ducati.
He had to duke it out with teammate Pecco Bagnaia and brother Alex Marquez early on, but he eventually overpowered both, before pulling away for another comfortable victory.
He stretches his lead at the top of the championship with a maximum points haul at Mugello, with his wins in Saturday’s sprint and today’s Grand Prix further strengthening his position at the top of the standings.
Week after week, he’s proving to be a cut above the rest.

‘DIGI’ PICKS PECCO’S POCKET!
Di Giannantonio makes his move with two laps to go as he sneaks up the inside of Bagnaia for third.
"Digi" immediately pulls a huge gap. Is that just a difference in pace, or has Pecco rolled off the throttle in disappointment?

IT’S ITALY VS ITALY FOR THIRD
We’re setting up for a grandstand finish for third, as Fabio Di Giannantonio stalks Pecco Bagnaia for third, and the honour of being the sole Italian representative on the podium.
Barring a disastrous late moment, a Marquez 1-2 looks all but certain, with Marc 1.8 seconds clear of Alex. But all eyes are on the all-Italian battle for third.
Can Bagnaia hold off "Digi" or will it be a nightmare end to the race for the former world champion?

MARQUEZ TURNS THE SCREW
Marc Marquez is in a class of his own out front. He’s banging in consistent laps and has stretched the gap to 1.9 seconds.
His brother Alex seemingly has nothing for him in the battle for the win, and may soon have company, with Pecco Bagnaia closing in a little.
But both of them are being caught by Di Giannantonio, who is the man on the move in the battle for the podium.
Could "Digi" even get second?

‘DIGI’ CLOSES IN
Fabio Di Giannantonio currently sits in fourth, and he’s starting to close the gap to Bagnaia in third.
The Italian hasn’t been embroiled in the dogfight out front, so his tyres might be a little fresher at this stage in the race.
He’s brought the gap down to half a second and, if he keeps chipping away, it might not be long until he’s in the fight for a podium finish.
14/23
BAGNAIA NEEDS TO GET A MOVE ON
Marc Marquez is starting to stretch his lead out front and is almost a second clear of his brother Alex, who is currently holding off Bagnaia in third.
The Italian knows he needs to get past Alex so he can start reeling in his teammate, but getting past Alex is no easy feat.
12/23
WILL TYRES BE A FACTOR?
It’s hot in Mugello, and everyone is racing with soft compound rear tyres. That gives the riders the best possible grip early on, but the rubber will start to wear and deteriorate as the race goes on.
If the tyres go off, the pace could drop, and those who look after their tyres could come into contention.
That won’t include noted tyre whisperer Maverick Vinales, though, after he was taken out of the race by Franco Morbidelli, and he was NOT happy about it.

BIG BROTHER RETAKES THE LEAD
Marc Marquez passes Alex Marquez for the lead. The gap between him and teammate Bagnaia is bigger now than it's been for the entire race. Can the Italian get back in touch with the Marquez boys out front, or will Marc stretch things out, as we've seen so many times before this season?
8/23
ALEX HAS MADE HIS MOVE
Alex Marquez is getting his head down and pushing hard to build a gap to his brother in second and Bagnaia in third. But he can't quite shake them off.
Meanwhile, Franco Morbidelli isn't too far behind in fourth, with Maverick Vinales in fifth.
Neil Hodgson highlighted Vinales' super-smooth riding style. Will that mean he can bring himself into the battle later on? Watch this space.

DON'T COUNT OUT ALEX!
There's more than one Marquez in this race, and a huge move into Turn 1 gives Alex Marquez the lead on Lap 6. He's not interested in the fight between the two factory Ducati teammates. He wants the win for himself, and he's pulled a third of a second gap to Bagnaia and his brother already.
That gap probably won't stay that big for long, though...

AN ACTION-PACKED START!
It looked like the leading trio were pulling away, but the back-and-forth at the front has given the chasing pack the chance to close back in. Leading the way is Franco Morbidelli, who is just a third of a second behind Alex Marquez.
Meanwhile, Marc Marquez and Pecco Bagnaia are dive-bombing each other at every opportunity as the lead continues to chop and change out front.

THEY'RE SWAPPING PAINT AT MUGELLO!
The gloves are off between Marc Marquez and Pecco Bagnaia, who bang fairings heading into Turn 2, then again in Turn 4, as Bagnaia passes Marquez into Turn 1, then goes wide, sparking a handlebar-bashing session between the pair that ended with Bagnaia dropping down to third, behind Alex Marquez.

He didn't stay behind for long. Marquez passes Bagnaia into Turn 1 to return to the front of the field. They're already starting to pull clear of the field, with Alex Marquez trying to hang on to their coattails. The pace is red-hot early, and the factory Ducatis are battling for supremacy early on.

BAGNAIA HITS THE FRONT!
The lights go out and both Marquez and Bagnania get off to a flying start. Marquez held the lead through Turn 1, but Bagnaia dived up the inside in Turn 2 to snatch the lead as the whole of Mugello roared its approval.
