Marco Bezzecchi was a surprise winner at Grand Prix Great Britain on Sunday, but Sylvain Guintoli explained he had rated him as a dark horse after Saturday's Sprint, when he took fourth place. Sylvain Guintoli was impressed by Marco Bezzecchi’s display at Grand Prix Great Britain but expressed his sympathy for Fabio Quartararo.
Bezzecchi emerged victorious on Sunday as he watched other riders struggle in the cold conditions, with both Marquez brothers and Fabio Bagnaia among the high-profile names who slipped around on the track.
The Aprilia rider managed his tyres expertly, and benefitted when Yamaha Monster’s Quartararo suffered a technical fault that forced him to abandon the race.
It was the first win since 2023 for Bezzecchi, but Guintoli pointed out he had been impressed by his performance in Saturday’s Sprint, where he finished fourth.
He told TNT Sports: "He was just really impressive. You could see that he was really at ease with the front end of his Aprilia. With all the guys who opted to start with a soft front, it was a bit of a gamble.
"Bezz made it work, and he was so confident. He was able to attack people, and make the most of his Aprilia.
"Bezzecchi, a great performance, he just outclassed everybody. We knew he was going to be a dark horse for the race, but coming back from that far away, what a performance!"

‘So sad for Fabio Quartararo’ - Guintoli reflects on retirement

Quartararo had a problem with his rear height device, which led him to be unable to maintain the necessary speed before withdrawing altogether.
The Frenchman also crashed at Le Mans in the previous outing, and Guintoli praised his race until he was struck down by misfortune.
He explained: "It’s so sad for Fabio Quartararo, because of the effort and the risk he took.  The effort that he put in at the start of the race, and the effort he was putting into managing his race, as well.
"It was absolutely brilliant. His rear height device, you can see there, stayed locked.
"Something went wrong on the mechanical side there, so a real [disappointment] for Fabio there."
