MotoGP: Michael Laverty praises Jorge Martin's 'perfect mindset' after 2024 world championship triumph in Barcelona

Jorge Martin became the 2024 MotoGP world champion on Sunday in Barcelona, where he secured third place on the day. Championship rival Francesco Bagnaia claimed the race victory in Catalonia, but that was not enough to overhaul the Spaniard's title lead, which TNT Sports expert Michael Laverty said had been consistently built up over the course of a thrilling MotoGP season.

Former rider Michael Laverty praised new MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin for his “perfect mindset” during a title-winning season.
Last year, Martin pushed Francesco Bagnaia hard for glory, but it was the Italian who emerged victorious.
This time, the roles were reversed, as Martin took the lead in the world championship standings, and Bagnaia was not consistent enough over the course of the season.
While the Italian had a chance to win the title on Sunday in Barcelona after his sprint race victory, Bagnaia only needed to finish ninth or better to be certain of triumph.
He rode to a relatively comfortable third place, and became the first rider to win a title with a satellite team, with the competition traditionally dominated by manufacturers.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Laverty was full of praise for the new champion, and pointed to his hard work in the off-season and his reaction to disappointment as reasons for the success in 2024.

“Hats off to Jorge Martin,” Laverty began. “There were mistakes from Francesco Bagnaia, but Martin delivered every time.
“The third places, like he’s done today, are what made him the world champion.
“He’s been through the wringer. Last year he didn’t quite achieve it, and he went away to work over the winter. Became a stronger and more rounded athlete.
“He started the year with the perfect mindset, and he delivered. He’s the right person to be awarded No. 1 today.”
