Tokyo ePrix recap - Dan Ticktum pulls off shocking last-minute overtake on Jake Dennis to claim second victory in Formula E for Cupra Kiro

Dan Ticktum claimed his second Formula E victory in a chaotic Tokyo ePrix that saw him clinch the win on the final lap, jumping at the chance to prove victorious when Jake Dennis’ Andretti suffered a power cut.

Dennis led a majority of the race from pole position and managed to combat Cupra Kiro’s undercut, but ran out of energy in the final lap, which left him vulnerable to a sneaky snatch from Ticktum.

It was an emotional day for Citroen, whose Team Principal Cyril Blais passed away last week, and Nick Cassidy was able to land a position on the podium after starting in eighth place.

Ticktum’s victory has come at the perfect time, as the Briton is a free agent with no seat secured for next season, and he has proved to be a force to be reckoned with.

The championship has swung in Jaguar’s favour in terms of the team standings, due to neither Porsche driver being able to score points today.

The former championship leader, Pascal Wehrlein, has dropped to second place in the drivers’ atandings too, after retiring with severe damage.

There are just three races to go now for this season of Formula E, with one more in Tokyo ahead of the double-header in London. Due to Pascal Wehrlein retiring from the race, he lost the lead of the championship to Mitch Evans. This race has also worked incredibly well in Jaguar's favour in the Teams' Standings, with neither Porsche driver scoring points today.

An emotional Nick Cassidy brought it home for Citroën in third place and honoured the passing of his Team Principal, Cyril Blais. It was a brilliant race for Cassidy, who started in eighth place and executed a great strategy to finish on the podium in Tokyo.

Cassidy said: "Yeah, it's a bit tough right now, to be honest. Yeah, it's tough, but it's amazing.

"The team have done a really good job with the car they've given me from FP1, and they gave me a great strategy.

"They gave me a great car, but everyone's hurting right now, and I'm glad we could do our best in conditions like today."

Although Jake Dennis did not manage to claim the victory, he settled for P2 after suffering a power cut on the final lap. This, however, is not the be-all and end-all as the pendulum has swung in his favour, shooting up to third in the Drivers' Standings.

Dennis said: "Well done to Dan. I mean, what a race from him! What strategy from the team, and he executed a really good race. He deserved a good result this year, and he's finally got it.

"From our end, I felt like we did a pretty flawless race until the final stretch. You know, the auto cut obviously kicked in with no energy, and I either had to swerve left on Dan and cause a crash, or I had to let him go and take the points.

"So we took the 21 points and closed in on the championship lead. We're only 14 points back now, so it's on.

"The rain cost us heavily. I really struggled in the rain. I had no performance, and then obviously it brought Dan and Nick back into contention.

"And then when you basically lead 70, 80% of the race or in clean air, I had no energy at the end, so I was pretty cooked. So a bit of a shame. Felt like we deserved the win, but yeah, pole position and P2 is a good day."

Chaotic final scenes saw Dan Ticktum jump on the opportunity to reclaim the lead of the Tokyo ePrix after the polesitter Jake Dennis suffered a technical issue on the last lap.

Ticktum said: "Firstly, a big thank you to my team. This has really been one of the hardest seasons I can remember in my whole career.

"We really haven't had any fortune. We've made mistakes as a team. I've made mistakes, but today was the opposite of that. You know, we nailed it.

"The last lap, I thought I'd used too much energy in the pit window. I had such a big gap, I thought I might have over-consumed a little bit too much, and they were going to come back at me.

"But even when I came out of Attack Mode, the targets were still okay. So Dennis got past, obviously, with his last few seconds.

"I didn't want to fight that one too much and I was quite happy with P2 really. It's come at a very, very good time in my career.

"A lot of people know that I'm currently a free agent, and I don't really know what more I can do to prove that I should remain in Formula E."

Dan Ticktum is victorious in Tokyo after snatching the lead from Jake Dennis in the final two corners of the race. He played it safe trailing behind the Andretti, until he launched a speedy attack around Dennis on Turn 16. Dennis had to settle for second place in the end.

Nick Cassidy brings it home in third place for Citroën, paying homage to his Team Principal, Cyril Blais, who recently passed away.

The final flock of drivers have used their final deployments of Pit Boost in attempts to claim a position in the top ten. Running in second place, Dan Ticktum asked his team to communicate to Jake Dennis to "not fight" in order to protect both of their positions with battles ensuing behind.

Dennis and Ticktum look comfortable in the lead, but Nick Cassidy is being forced to defend from Taylor Barnard and Mitch Evans both hoping to snatch P3. On Lap 34, Dennis confirmed that it has started to rain, and the droplets are falling hard.

All they need to do is drag it out until the finish line...

Nick Cassidy has assumed second place of the race after snatching the position from Edoardo Mortara on the exit of Turn 15 on Lap 28, protecting Dan Ticktum by holding up the rest of the pack. However, the buffer did not last very long as Jake Dennis stormed past using his final two minutes of Attack Mode on Lap 29.

Behind, Oliver Rowland has shot up to eight place but runs behind two other drivers using their Attack Mode. At the back of the pack, Felipe Drugovich deployed six minutes of Attack Mode in hopes of claiming a position in the top ten.

Towards the end of Lap 29, Dennis swept past Ticktum around the inside and reassumed the lead of the race right as his Attack Mode ran out. The leading duo possess the exact same amount of energy for the closing stages of the race, so it truly is a pure fight to the finish line. Nick Cassidy runs in third place on Lap 31, but both Taylor Barnard and Edoardo Mortara are scrapping it out right behind.

There is no rain as it stands, but there is no say as to whether it will return in the final few laps.

Last year's victor, Oliver Rowland, has been absent so far this race and is seemingly the last of the pack to take his Pit Boost stop and Attack Mode. He is, however, incredible at managing energy levels and often waits as long as possible to make the stops and use his Attack Mode to power through the closing stages of the race.

On Lap 25, Rowland was in the lead of the race with 31% energy, ahead of Pepe Marti and his teammate Dan Ticktum. At the end of the lap, Rowland and Marti fled to the pits for their boosts while Ticktum assumed the lead once again.

Only time will tell whether Ticktum took his Pit Boost too early as the polesitter, Jake Dennis, has just deployed Attack Mode and looks like he will be able to snatch back his lead. It has worked out well for Rowland, having gained eight net positions and came out of the pits in 10th place.

Dennis and Rowland have the most Attack Mode left out of the drivers deploying it on Lap 27, but Rowland does have the edge due to taking it later.

The next round of Attack Mode is upon us and Dan Ticktum uses six minutes of his to go flat out across the street circuit. It looks like the preferred strategy this weekend is to immediately deploy Attack Mode after taking their Pit Boost stops.

Some drivers have, however, been told that the rainfall is to increase towards the end of the race and have been urged to not use Attack Mode just yet. The race leader Jake Dennis came into the pits at the end of Lap 21 to use his Attack Mode, hoping to avoid the undercut by Ticktum. The Andretti team seem to think that Ticktum took his Attack Mode too early, but he did manage to take the lead of the race while Dennis was in the pits.

Unfortunately, it was the end of the race for Pascal Wehrlein, with the championship leader retiring from the Tokyo ePrix after suffering too much damage due to multiple collisions.

Rain finally started to fall on Lap 17, and it looks like Sebastien Buemi used a brilliant strategy to climb up into third place. The Envision driver has slotted himself firmly in place, using the last of his Attack Mode to snatch second place from Edoardo Mortara around the inside.

Jake Dennis still holds the lead of the race but Buemi is close behind, searching for a way around the Andretti. The Pit Boost window has officially opened, and a handful of drivers have flocked to the pitlane.

Dan Ticktum, Maximilian Gunther, Norman Nato, Nick Cassidy, and Joel Eriksson have all taken their Pit Boost stops, and have fallen to the back of the pack. That, however, won't last very long as their extra 10% energy will take them incredibly far.

Chaos unfolded after the drivers left the pitlane with former teammates Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa making contact. Wehrlein's front wing was smashed to pieces and da Costa was planted into the wall. He miraculously managed to keep driving, but Wehrlein was forced to enter the pitlane.

The pace is slowly starting to pick up after the early stages of the race saw drivers play it incredibly safe. The fastest lap of the race has so far been Sebastien Buemi with a 1:16.804, which is nowhere near the pace of qualifying.

Buemi was the first of the pack to deploy Attack Mode on Lap 14, using four minutes to shoot up from ninth to fifth on Lap 15. He is set to climb into the third position on the podium, overtaking every driver in his sight. The Envision driver is the only one on track looking to make up positions early, ahead of Pit Boost as well as saving his back in the case of rain.

There have not been many overtakes by Lap 9, with the most likely strategy being to play it safe and hold position until the Pit Boost window opens. It is predicted that the window will open around Lap 16 but drivers do have the chance to take it early in order to get ahead of the rest of the pack.

The drivers are now opting to save more energy, in anticipation of the Pit Boost window. Dan Ticktum attempted to snatch fourth place from Taylor Barnard on Lap 10, but was unable to pull off the tight squeeze. Potential rain is said to hit the street circuit in around 20 minutes, which would take us towards the closing stages of the ePrix.

Norman Nato also received a five-second penalty for causing a collision at Turn 7, accidentally clipping Pascal Wehrlein on the opening lap.

Jake Dennis is firmly in the lead of the race on Lap 5, with the Andretti driver beginning to pull away from Edoardo Mortara. His place is brilliant, setting the best lap of the race so far. However, he may soon fall under pressure from the Mahindra driver lurking behind, trying to cling on to a car's length of distance.

The energy levels as it stands is averaging around 86% across the board, with every single driver in the top ten with the same figure. Oliver Rowland is down in 15th place using more energy than the rest of the pack in attempt to climb up the field. He is hoping to repeat his emphatic victory for Nissan from last year, but it would be an incredible feat for him to even make it to the podium at this stage.

Pascal Wehrlein is in a similar position, running in seventh place. The German driver is in dire need of points in this race to retain his lead in the Drivers' Standings, as Mitch Evans is only nine points away from him.

Mitch Evans managed to make up four places and climb into 12th place by the second lap, competing against Pascal Wehrlein for crucial points in the championship. The Porsche championship leader is down in seventh place as it stands, slotting right between Nick Cassidy and Maximilian Gunther.

Thunder has been reported on track during the Japanese night race, with a possibility of rainfall during the mid-point of the race. It is a Pit Boost race, so the pack could be playing it safely during the early stages. Sebastien Buemi picked up a five-second time penalty for a collision at Turn 7, clipping Nyck de Vries on the entry to the corner, which was quickly cleared with no issues.

The top five of the order has remained unchanged, but stay tuned for chaos.

Polesitter Jake Dennis got off to a brilliant start, leading the pack off the line with Edoardo Mortara trailing closely behind. The race leader is looking to hold off the Mahindra driver as the two fight it out for fourth in the Drivers' Standings.

Antonio Felix da Costa managed to defend his third place position from Taylor Barnard, with Dan Ticktum jumping with the chance to climb up into the podium positions. There was a collision at Turn 7, and a double yellow at Turn 17, with racing going wheel to wheel on the opening lap.

There are just five minutes to go until the Tokyo ePrix gets underway. The drivers are lined up on the grid and are ready to get going. There has been some talk of rain this afternoon, but we shall see whether it comes into play.

This marks the end of an era for Porsche and Andretti, with the American team parting ways with the title-winning manufacturer. Nissan has produced some incredible powertrains over the years since its debut in Season 5 and is speculated to dominate the next generation of cars.
