Massa went quickest with a mark of 1:31.260, over three tenths faster than Scuderia newcomer Kimi Raikkonen.
World champion Fernando Alonso was next best, clocking 1:31.851 for McLaren while Robert Kubica was fourth for BMW Sauber.
Britain's McLaren rookie Lewis Hamilton was a solid fifth, but the session was overshadowed by a huge crash involving Renault's Haikki Kovalainen.
The Finn was unhurt, but it is believed that the extensive damage to the car could seriously disrupt the reigning constructors champions' testing programme.
The Bahrain test is crucial, being the final chance for the teams to hone their machines in an official test ahead of the season-opener in Melbourne on March 18.
