Argentina 0-1 Spain - World Cup final result as Ferran Torres extra-time winner denies Lionel Messi dream farewell after Enzo Fernandez red card

Ferran Torres came off the bench to fire Spain to a merited second World Cup crown with a golden 106th-minute winner sealing a 1-0 victory against 10-man Argentina after extra-time in New Jersey.

Luis de la Fuente's stylish European champions dominated the holders from start to finish in a one-sided but eminently forgettable final that saw the three-time winners fail to register a shot at goal until they trailed in the final few minutes of extra-time.

It all got too much for some on Lionel Scaloni's losing side with several Argentina players, including Leandro Paredes, involved in a fiery brawl seconds after the full-time whistle, with the midfielder shown a red card for his involvement in the melee.

Spain were helped greatly when Enzo Fernandez was needlessly red carded in added time of the 90 minutes when he picked up a second booking for a crude challenge on Pau Cubarsi.

As VAR confirmed the sending off, Argentina's hopes of becoming the first side to win back-to-back World Cups in 64 years arguably disappeared with him.

The winning goal duly arrived when Nico Williams did wonderfully well to head down a looping Pedro Porro cross for fellow sub Torres to smash a finish high into the net beyond the inspired Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who made some excellent stops, including a fine save from a Lamine Yamal free-kick in the final minute.

In truth, Spain should have been out of sight long before they struck, with Williams having a goal harshly ruled out in the first period of extra-time after Mikel Merino was penalised for a soft foul on Nicolas Otamendi.

Despite their astonishing levels of dominance, Spain were remarkably almost pegged back in the dying seconds when Argentina substitute Giuliano Simeone thumped over the bar from 12 yards out as Lionel Messi's hopes of a golden World Cup finale ended in tearful dismay.

Messi scored eight goals at the finals, but was pipped to the Golden Boot award by France forward Kylian Mbappe, whose two goals in the riotous 6-4 defeat to England in the bronze match on Saturday saw him reach 10 goals, two more than the Argentina captain.

But for Spain, it is another period of sustained success at the elite level.

La Roja become only the fourth national side to be crowned world and European champions at the same time, alongside West Germany (1972 and 1974) and France (1998 and 2000), and of course, the great Spanish side that won Euro 2008, the World Cup in 2010 and Euro 2012, to become the first team to complete a historic treble which could yet be matched at Euro 2028.

Captain Rodri picked up the Golden Ball award for the tournament's best player, while Cubarsi was named best young player with goalkeeper Unai Simon collecting the Golden Glove gong for losing only one goal, in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Belgium, in eight outings at the finals.

"So much pride," said a triumphant Luis de la Fuente. "Pride for this generation of footballers that have been growing with this idea, staying loyal to the idea, and doing their best.

"They are an example of a team, a group, a family, and a collective of great players that have been exceptional.

"I'm just so proud to have accompanied them on this journey, to have been there with them on this trajectory is an honour.

"I can't really tell you how I feel. All I can say was it was worth it. Of course at the moment I am very emotional, particularly having watched from behind the scenes.

"I have spoken so much to the players, who said to me, 'Boss, we've won it all', and it's marvellous. This generation of players is an example for Spanish sport, for the Spanish youth. Together we are much stronger, and that is why we don't forget anyone.

"Of course, we would have liked to win the game much sooner. The Martinez save prevented us from doing so. We tried and tried to get on the scoresheet but weren't able to, but this is a World Cup final, even against ten men at the end we had to suffer.

"But, we like to suffer, and I'll say it again, we were prepared for everything."

Alan Shearer told the BBC: "There is no place or space for that. There's a way to lose, we know it hurts. I think it was Paredes who threw at least two haymakers. The best team has won from start to finish."

Wayne Rooney told the BBC: "Does it surprise you? It doesn't surprise me. We've seen this from Argentina before. It's not the reaction you want to see. We saw some of the reaction after they knocked England out of the World Cup, and I think Enzo Fernandez has got what he deserved as well. It's disappointing and it's sad.

"If you lose a game of football, you should be graceful and you should just get off the pitch. It was very poor from them."

Joe Hart told the BBC: "It was disgusting. There was man on the pitch who did have class, and that was Lionel Messi who shook hands with each one of those Spanish players. The game is done and Argentina can have no complaints over what happened today. It was disgusting behaviour.

"Rodri didn't need to get in their faces but when you've been wound up for 120 minutes and you felt you've been wronged and you've got that win, leave it. With Argentina, you're not surprised they've crossed the line again."

And he has not yet reached the age of 20. A European and world champion.

Spain are the world champions! Ferran Torres is the winner for the European champions, who are deserving winners in New Jersey. Argentina are not happy with the outcome here. But they deserved little on the day for the manner in which this match played out.

But that has too much pace on the delivery as Simon comes off his line to collect with ease. Spain trying to game manage this home in the final few minutes.

Well, panic in that Spanish defence as Merino and Cubarsi somehow clear the cross by Giuliano Simeone, who then lifts a finish miles over from 12 yards when he looked set to level late on. Five minutes added. Big chance to find the leveller.

Alan Shearer told the BBC: "Williams does so well to keep he ball alive at the far post to nod it back into the path of Ferran Torres. He makes no mistake, but it was brilliant from Williams to keep the ball alive. It's no less than Spain deserve."

Merino back on his feet after taking the full brunt of a Messi volley straight off his face. Time against Argentina now.

Offside flag is raised. How close was that to the clincher as he bounded onto the Yamal pass. Great finish beyond Martinez, but he had just set off a second too early. It remains 1-0 to Spain.

Alexis Mac Allister has been yellow carded for a spot of dissent. All falling apart a bit for the holders in the final.

Argentina have failed to get forward at any moment with any purpose in this match. Not one shot on or off target. Messi will have to find some serious magic now for the 10 men.

Ferran Torres smashes the ball high into the net with Williams doing wonderfully well to keep the attack alive with a header back into the traffic. The finish was so good, and well deserved. Spain on the brink of glory!
