Germany v Cote d’Ivoire - 2026 FIFA World Cup live updates and latest as sub Deniz Undav bags late goal to earn four-time winners comeback win

Super-sub Deniz Undav came to Germany’s rescue, as his late brace earned a 2-1 victory over Cote d’Ivoire - and passage to the last-32 of the FIFA World Cup.

Julian Nagelsmann’s men had the bulk of the early chances, as Jamal Musiala and Felix Nmecha came close from distance, while Aleksandar Pavlovic had a goal chalked off for a foul on the goalkeeper.

The Elephants regrouped during the hydration break, though, and scored straight after the restart when Amad Diallo’s strike was blocked into the path of Franck Kessie, who coolly tucked home from close range.

A German onslaught was expected after the break, but it was the African side who continued to attack, with Kessie, Yan Diomande and Inao Oulai wasting good openings.

A trio of changes from the four-time winners turned the tide though, and one of them, Nadiem Amiri, teed up another, Deniz Undav, to equalise with a delightful volley from the edge of the six-yard box.

He had another go late on, only to shoot straight at Yahia Fofana, who also made a stunning last-gasp save from Nathaniel Brown.

The goalkeeper could do nothing to prevent Undav from pivoting and converting from Nmecha’s pass in injury time though, as Germany secured a 2-1 success to secure a place in the knockout stage for the first time since 2014.

The final whistle goes and Germany, from behind, have done it. Undav's delightful brace secures a brilliant 2-1 victory for a side who struggled up until the hour mark, when Julian Naggelsmann's substitutes turned the game on its head.

He has done it AGAIN! The substitute grabs his second of the night with a deadly finish from inside the area.

Picked out near the penalty spot, the forward pivots and converts past Fofana.

There's a check for offside, but he's easily on. That is just superb forward play. One touch to tee himself up, a second to convert.

Germany are queuing up on the edge of the area as Amiri, in acres of space, receives possession, but his shot lacks power and Fofana saves.

That's the stop of the night! Brown's first-time volley from a left-wing cut-back is heading into the far corner, until Fofana pounces low to his left and brilliantly palms away.

Oh what a chance that is for the Ivorians! Pepe strides down the right hand side at pace before picking out Adringra in the box. The forward just needs to compose himself and shoot, but his control is terrible and Germany can clear.

The striker sets his sights on goal from miles out, and he manages to hit the target, but it's straight at the goalkeeper.

And another change for Germany, which sees Havertz replaced by Goretzka.

The forward, who is wanted by Liverpool, has caused no end of problems, but his night is over. Ex-Arsenal man Pepe comes on.

The defender pulled his hamstring in touching the ball down the line and is replaced by Doue.

Cote d'Ivoire certainly need to change the momentum of this game somehow. A 1-1 draw would be a good result for them, and put them on the brink of the knockout stage. But Germany are the coming force in this game.
