Cote d'Ivoire v Norway - World Cup result as Erling Haaland's scrappy late winner sets up last 16 clash with Brazil

Erling Haaland's scuffed 86th minute finish saw Norway sneak past a spirited Cote d'Ivoire 2-1 as they won a World Cup knockout match for the first time.

It was a cagey start for both sides as, barring an early header, Haaland barely had a touch as Norway struggled to settle.

Cote d'Ivoire looked more fluent in possession, with wingers Yan Diomande and Nicolas Pepe threatening, but could not create clear-cut chances for striker Ange-Yoan Bonny.

It took a moment of magic to break the deadlock. Antonio Nusa cut inside from the left flank, and curled a shot over Yahia Fofana into the top corner with five minutes remaining in the half.

However, Cote d'Ivoire did not lie down in the second half, and created more chances, coming closest when Pepe got a snap shot from a tight angle, but put his close-range shot straight at Orjan Nyland.

They brought Amad Diallo on to try and create more chances, but the Manchester United winger was needed defensively first when he cleared Kristoffer Ajer's effort from a corner off the line.

Five minutes later, Amad got the equaliser, twisting and turning through Norwegian shorts before lifting the ball over Nyland.

The match looked destined for extra time, but Oscar Bobb led a counter before finding Patrick Berg. Berg squared to Haaland, who had an open goal, but his scuffed finish was only just enough to beat Fofana.

Cote d'Ivoire had little time to respond, but nearly did when Amad fizzed a free-kick goalwards from 35 yards out, only to be denied by a stunning Nyland save.

Ultimately, Cote d'Ivoire's first knockout match ended in defeat as they continued to struggle on the World Cup stage.

Haaland and Norway will face Gabriel's Brazil in the next round, renewing old rivalries, and the winner of that match will face England in the quarter-final should The Three Lions beat DR Congo in their last-32 tie.

As for the penalty appeal, Guela Doue was perhaps fortunate to get away with a bit of wrestling.
