Colombia 1-0 Ghana - World Cup result as Jhon Arias strike sees Colombia beat Antoine Semenyo's Ghana in Kansas City and seal last-16 spot

Jhon Arias' first-half strike was enough for Colombia to book their place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The win means Colombia will face Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday, with a potential quarter-final against Argentina or Egypt.

Ghana started the game in electric fashion with Thomas Partey flashing a shot wide within the first minute.

But that was as good as it got for the African side in the first half as Colombia quickly asserted dominance.

Jhon Cordoba was replaced by Luis Suarez early on after suffering a groin injury and the substitute was the man who set up the decisive goal.

He dribbled to the byline and picked out Arias at the back post with a great cross that allowed his team-mate to volley home after 14 minutes.

After the break, Colombia thought they had doubled their lead when Luis Diaz turned home Juan Quintero's cross, but the Bayern Munich forward was ruled offside.

Ghana failed to threaten in attack for large parts of the game which allowed Colombia to comfortably see out the 1-0 win.

The win means the South American side advance to the Last-16 where they will take on Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver.

The Swiss knocked out Algeria 2-0 in their Last-32 tie on Thursday.

Ghana worked hard but Colombia simply had too much for them in terms of quality and energy.

There was very little from the African side throughout the game and they didn't make Colombia have to work too hard for the win.

The South Americans showed their class - particularly in the decisive goal - and will fancy themselves to go far in the tournament.

The Colombian fans in their numbers shout 'OLE' every time a South American makes a pass and it results in Quintero playing a great long-ball that Campaz meets and fires over.

Not a single chance for Ghana in added time so far. This is quality game management from Colombia.

A brilliant cross comes in from the left and it splits the Ghana defense and keeper. Rios goes for it at the back post but heads wide.

There was a clash of heads as a result which gives us a short break.

The fourth-official gets his moment to shine and he adds six minutes on to the 90. Can Ghana fashion a chance or will Colombia get over the line?

This is a big change if Ghana find a late equaliser. Some fans boo the change as Campaz takes his place.

We're ticking towards added time in Kansas and still only a goal separates the time.

Ghana come forward and Fatawu bends a shot that drops the wrong side of the crossbar but the referee calls for a foul after Semenyo threw Puerta to the ground.

I think everyone in the stadium thought that was in! What an effort from Quintero who picks up the ball in the Ghana half and drives forward before unleashing a canon of an effort that swerves narrowly wide of the post.

Diaz sees his shot deflected and wins a corner which is whipped in perfectly. Sanchez is unmarked at the center of the goal but his header is poor and gives Ati-Zigi the chance to save it and he does.

Sanchez was just falling backwards as he connected with the ball.

Ayew and Yirenkyi make way and are replaced by Nuamah and Adu.

Quintero opts to shoot - even though it was from range - and gets it all wrong.

The ball keeps rising and goes sailing over the bar.

Mojica is wiped out by Seidu outside the box and he gets a yellow card for his troubles.

Meanwhile, this set-piece is in a great spot for Colombia.

Arias makes way to great cheers and Quintero takes his place. The Colombian fans are happy to see him brought on.

Ghana are the ones on the front-foot and Semenyo looks to dance his way through the Colombian defence - he does well but has the ball kicked away from his feet.

It falls to Partey who takes a snap-shot but he drags it wide.

The hydration break is called and Colombia will be the happiest about that.

The winger has brought great energy to Ghana but his protests for a throw-in have led to him going into the book.

The African side have had moments but each time their final ball has been either poor or the wrong choice.

It is the one thing letting them down as for the most part they have held their own but it's hard to imagine them scoring as it stands.

Sibo and Williams make way and Owusu and Fatawu replace them.

By far the craziest spell of the game with both sides throwing everything at it and throwing caution to the wind.

Ayew gets another chance to deliver a set-piece but his cross is poor again.

How this is still 1-0 is anyone's guess.

Colombian pandemonium is cut short! Partey loses the ball in his own half and the South Americans race forward.

A low cross from Arias is turned in by Diaz but the flag goes up and he is offside.

Colombia come back minutes later - the Ghana defense is nowhere to be seen - and Diaz has a one-on-one but his shot is straight at the keeper.

Two big moments but Colombia cannot take either.
