CANADA HIT NINE-MAN QATAR FOR SIX IN VANCOUVER
Jonathan David hit a hat-trick as Canada claimed their first-ever World Cup win with an emphatic 6-0 thrashing of Qatar.
The two sides met in their Group B encounter having both picked up their first-ever World Cup points in their respective opening group games.
But in their meeting at BC Place in Vancouver, it was one-way traffic from start to finish as Canada claimed a huge win in an at-times ill-tempered clash.
After being criticised for a lack of cutting edge in their first game, Canada were clearly determined to put that right against Qatar, and after a first-minute scare, they completely dominated the match.
The scoring began on 16 minutes, when the man who earned them a draw with Bosnia, Cyle Larin, stabbed home from close range to put the co-hosts ahead. Then, just before the half-hour mark, David hit his first as he smashed a spectacular volley into the top corner to double Canada's lead.
Things went from bad to worse for Qatar on 33 minutes when full-back Homam El Amin brought down the outstanding Tajon Buchanan as he charged into the penalty area. The referee initially awarded a spot-kick and gave El Amin a yellow card, but after a VAR review, the decision was changed to a free-kick on the edge of the area, and the card was upgraded to a straight red.
And a nightmare first half turned into a complete disaster when David struck again in stoppage time. His goal-poaching instincts were on full display as he found himself in the right place, at the right time, to tuck away the rebound after Larin's effort was well saved.
The second half quickly turned into a bad-tempered affair when Assim Madibo's foul on Ismael Kone left the Canadian player down with a suspected broken leg. Tempers flared, with Kone's teammates incensed by the challenge. After the officials restored order, Madibo was given a straight red card to take Qatar down to nine men.
A thrashing was on the cards, and Canada, clearly fired up by what had just happened, went all out to score as many additional goals as possible.
The man who replaced the injured Kone, Nathan Saliba, added a fourth via a well-placed free-kick, then raised Kone's shirt aloft in tribute as the BC Place crowd roared their approval. Then, 11 minutes later, another substitute, Jacob Shaffelburg, forced a fifth when his shot was lashed into his own net by Qatar defender Mohammad Manai.
There was still time for David to complete his hat-trick, with a smart turn and finish making it 6-0 and completing a rousing victory for the co-hosts, who picked up their first-ever World Cup win in style.

    FULL TIME: CANADA 6-0 QATAR
The full-time whistle blows, and tempers have flared once again as players from both sides get in each other's faces on the touchline.
The anger from that injury to Kone is still fresh, and a few people clearly had a few words to say at the final whistle.

GOAL! JONATHAN DAVID COMPLETES HIS HAT-TRICK!
It's the perfect way for Canada to round off a remarkable match, as their star striker has a World Cup hat-trick to his name.
Saliba cuts inside and looks to strike from distance. His effort strikes David, who controls it instantly, turns on a sixpence and slots home his third of the night.
    It's 6-0!

    STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of NINE additional minutes at the end of this game.
Given what's happened in this half, that seems pretty stingy, but I doubt either side will complain too much.

    CAN CANADA ADD EVEN MORE?
The game has descended into a glorified attack versus defence drill, and it's Canada doing all the attacking.
Qatar just can't get out of their own half, and Canada are still hunting more goals.
There's plenty more time left, too. The events of this second half mean we're sure to get additional time that runs into double figures.

    IT'S FIVE!
If Marsch did want more, then he just got another one!
Substitute Jacob Shaffelburg sweeps a low volley towards the Qatar goal and it looks like it might just be heading just wide of the far post, but Qatar defender Mohammad Manai's attempt to get back and clear it ends in disaster as he smashes it into his own net.
It looks for all the world like an own goal, but it was just announced in the stadium as Shaffelburg's goal, so we'll have to see what the official verdict is.

    DOES MARSCH WANT MORE?
Those two substitutions are both VERY attacking options for Canada. They're not the sort of changes you make if you want to just calm things down and see things out.
Nope, this looks like Jesse Marsch wanting his players to go for more goals as they bid to take their goal difference out of sight heading into the final group game.

SALIBA MAKES IT FOUR, THEN PAYS TRIBUTE TO KONE
Canada have four, and it's the man who just came on to replace the injured Kone who scored it.
Nathan Saliba stepped up and planted his free kick into the bottom corner of the net to register the first free-kick goal of the tournament and make it 4-0.
Saliba immediately runs to the bench and grabs Kone's shirt and raises it aloft to the stadium by way of a tribute to the injured teammate he just replaced.

BC PLACE RISES AS ONE FOR KONE
Kone is being carried off the field on a stretcher and, remarkably, is sitting up as he is being taken to the dressing room. Despite what looked like a nasty injury, Kone was able to wave to the fans, who gave him a rousing reception as he departed the scene.

    HORRIBLE INJURY TO KONE
Ismael Kone is down after a challenge from Assim Madibo, who looks absolutely distraught.
The initial reaction from everyone on the pitch was the Kone has sustained a broken leg, and understandably FIFA aren't showing replays of the challenge as medical staff rush onto the field to attend to the Canadian player.
The referee has taken time to compose himself and calm things down, then issued a straight red card for Madibo.
There's some angry exchanges taking place between the two benches, with Jesse Marsch, himself still irate, trying to calm his players down.
