AUSTRIA LEAVE IT LATE TO WIN THEIR FIRST WORLD CUP GAME IN 36 YEARS AGAINST A DEFIANT JORDAN SIDE
A late Yazan Al-Arab own goal coupled with a Marko Arnautovic penalty was enough for Ralf Rangnick's Austria to beat Jordan at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
Austria's Romano Schmid opened the scoring in the 21st minute after he curled a brilliant effort into the top corner from outside the box.
However, after the goal, Jordan were the better side for the majority of the half, hitting the bar through Olwan minutes after going behind.

But it was not until the 50th minute that Jordan got the goal their efforts deserved as Ali Olwan cut inside and placed a great shot into the back of the net via the inside of the post.
Austria thought they had restored their lead on 68 minutes through Arnautovic, but VAR deemed Stefan Posch had handled the ball in the build-up.
But minutes later, Al-Arab turned a corner into his own goal to give Rangnick's side the lead in the 77th minute.
With 10 minutes of added time, Jordan could not find a response and substitute Saleem Obaid was penalised by VAR for blocking a shot with his arm in the box.
Arnautovic, on his 134th appearance for Austria, stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to seal the three points for his side.
Austria take on Argentina on Monday in Dallas while Jordan face Algeria in San Francisco on Tuesday.

WHAT COMES NEXT?
The result places Austria second in Group J behind Argentina who they play next on Monday in Dallas.
If Rangnick's side are to get anything out of that, they will need to be an awful lot better than they were today.
Jordan - who sit above Algeria on goal difference - take on the African side on Tuesday at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
They will have taken a lot from today's game which saw them outplay Austria for large parts of it. It will be a must-win game for both sides if they have hopes of making the knock-out stage.

FULL-TIME: AUSTRIA 3-1 JORDAN
And that is all she wrote. Austria run out comfortable winners - if the scoreline is anything to go by - but the story of the game was vert different.
Romano Schmid opened the scoring in spectacular fashion in a first-half that was dominated by Jordan.
The Asian side got what they deserved after the break when Ali Olwan finished brilliantly off the inside of the post to equalise.
But as the game progressed, Austria's changes changed the match while Jordan ran out of steam.
VAR ruled out one goal for the Europeans but moments later Austria had their breakthrough and finished it off with Arnautovic from the spot.

GOAL! AUSTRIA 3-1 JORDAN (ARNAUTOVIC (p) 90+13')
He steps up and slots it into the bottom corner sending Abulaila the wrong way.
90+10'
PENALTY FOR AUSTRIA
And the referee agrees with VAR and Austria have a late penalty. Substitute Obaid punished for the handball. I'm not sure why he did that as his intervention almost put the ball in the net.
Arnautovic to take.
90+9'
VAR CHECK FOR PENALTY
Some great build-up play from Rangnick's side which led to Arnautovic's cross/shot almost being turned into the Jordan net by a defender.
VAR are checking for a penalty as the deflection came off the defender's arm.
90+7'
CAN JORDAN FIND A GOAL?
Four minutes to play and there is little sign of Jordan finding a way back into this game. It would be a huge win for Austria who have not been at their best today.
90+5'
ABULAILA AT IT AGAIN
Oh my word! A pass back to the Jordan keeper sees him unable to control the ball and goes under his foot and behind for a corner and not a third Austrian goal.
Jordan's earlier free kick was headed clear and a following shot from outside the box dragged wide.
90+1'
HUGE CHANCE FOR ARNAUTOVIC
The Austrian striker is played in-behind and is one-on-one with the keeper but his effort is poor and Abulaila is able to make the stop.
That could've been that but Jordan go down the other end and win a free-kick outside of the Austria box.
90'
TEN MINUTES ADDED ON
That is plenty of time for Jordan to find a late equaliser as a number of teams have managed so far in this World Cup.
They will need to find some energy though - they look out on their feet.
87'
AUSTRIA IN CONTROL
Jordan look leggy, they have put an awful lot of effort into this game and it seems they will come up short.
Austria are knocking the ball around and Jordan haven't made many inroads since falling behind for a second time.
A clash of heads between Posch and Fakhouri leads to a stoppage and sees the latter replaced as we edge towards added time.
85'
A FULL HOUSE
Lots has been made of a lack of tickets being bought for some games at this World Cup but the stadium announcer has just stated 68,000-odd Jordan and Austrian fans have packed this 69,000 capacity stadium.
77'
GOAL! AUSTRIA 2-1 JORDAN (AL-ARAB og 77')
Arnautovic does get his moment, or does he? The corner comes in and it's a far better cross, Arnautovic races to the near-post to flick the ball at the goal but replays show it came off the back of Jordan defender Al-Arab.
The ball flies into the corner beyond a rooted Abulaila in goal.
A scuffle after the goal results in Sabitzer being booked.
75'
BIG LET-OFF FOR JORDAN
As the hydration break takes place Jordan can regroup as can Austria - this is a big final 15 minutes here in Santa Clara.
VAR comes to the rescue for Jordan after Abulaila made an absolute mess of a punch before Austria found the back of the net.
Chukwuemeka is making a difference for Austria, he's looked great on the ball and won another corner.
69'
NO GOAL! VAR RULE HANDBALL
Austria thought they had a regained the lead but VAR and then the referee agree Posch handled the ball in the build-up.
Arnautovic thought he had his moment at a World Cup but he does not. The corner comes in and the keeper makes an absolute meal of an easy punch.
It scuffs off his gloves and Posch uses his chest and then his arm before Arnautovic hammers the ball home from close range.
But none of it is to stand. Still 1-1!
68'
GOAL! AUSTRIA 2-1 JORDAN (ARNAUTOVIC 68')
65'
AUSTRIA WIN A CORNER
Rangnick's side are finding a groove and a low cross is turned behind for a corner.
64'
MAYHEM IN THE BOX
What has just happened?! A cross comes in from the left from Austria and there is little pressure on Abulaila as he looks to claim the ball.
But he flaps at it and drops the ball claiming he took a blow to the face - which he really didn't.
The referee doesn't fall for the antics and it results in a scramble for the ball. Chukwuemeka gets to it first and shoots but his block is fantastically blocked to spare the keeper's blushes.
61'
AUSTRIA FIRE OVER
First chance of the half for the Europeans as the ball travels to the back post where Posch is there to meet it.
The ball is rising as it gets to him on the half-volley and he cannot get his knee over the ball as he fires wildly over the bar.
59'
RANGNICK GOES TO HIS BENCH
Arnautovic's introduction at half time hasn't done enough for Austria.
Off goes the captain Alaba, Xaver Schlager and full-back Mwene.
On comes Paul Wanner, Spurs' Kevin Danso and former Chelsea player Carney Chukwuemeka.
