Scotland's hopes of making the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time ever are hanging in the balance - and now, there is nothing Steve Clarke's team can do, but watch their third-place rivals in agony.

Scotland 'probably going home', admits Clarke after Brazil loss

Clarke's side opened their North American campaign with a hard-fought victory over Haiti, labouring over the line through a deflected John McGinn effort.
The second of their back-to-back Boston battles was against Morocco, who beat Scotland via a very early Ismael Saibari strike.
Then came Brazil, who eased to a 3-0 victory. An early error gifted Vinicius Junior an opener, and he doubled the lead before half-time. Matheus Cunha made it three.
It means Scotland finished third in Group C with three points, and a goal difference of -3.
In previous World Cups, The Tartan Army would of course be heading home now - but this time, thanks to the fresh 48-team format, there is still hope...

How can Scotland qualify?

Of the 12 third-placed teams in the new-look tournament, eight will make the round of 32.
Prior to the North American adventure getting underway, Opta's supercomputer ran the numbers on the chance of progression from third place, depending on goal difference.
Being on -3 resulted in a 41.8% chance of qualification. To show the dramatic impact of the third Brazil goal in Miami, a -2 finish would have seen a 63.4% chance of making it through.
Either way, those rates are now dwindling. So, Scotland now need at least four third-place teams to finish with a record worse than three points with -3 goal difference.
There was bad news in Group B, the only section to finish before Scotland's, with Bosnia & Herzegovina sitting on four points from their three matches.
And more pain ensued later on the same evening, as Korea Republic finished in third place in Group A on the same points tally as Scotland but with a superior goal difference of -1.
As it stands, Scotland are the seventh-best side in the third-place table. That would be enough to qualify, but below them with a game to go are the likes of Belgium, Senegal and Ecuador.

Who could Scotland face in the last 32?

Every third-place team that makes it into the knockout stage will face a group winner in the round of 32.
Scotland have three possible options: the table-toppers of Groups A, E and I.

Mexico wrapped up Group A after two games, and will play their last-32 game on home soil at the imposing, iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Germany also only took two outings to seal top spot. If Scotland play them, it would mean a return to their adopted American home of Boston.
The third potential opponent will be either France or Norway, depending on the result of their matchday-three showdown. That clash would take place in New Jersey.
