VAN DIJK GETS LUCKY
Senegal threaten again! It's almost a disaster for the Netherlands, as Van Dijk isn't looking when De Jong passes to him inside his own box. The Dutch manage to scramble in defence and keep Senegal out, and eventually Diatta drags a shot wide.

VAN DIJK HEADS WIDE
He may have made a mess of that big chance, but De Jong is running the show in midfield. He bursts through a gap and sends a pass out to Dumfries, but the wing-back's cross is blocked for a corner.
Gakpo sticks it in the mixer and Van Dijk gets up to meet it, but the defender's header is well wide.

SARR WITH A GREAT EFFORT
Ooooh, so close! Fantastic footwork from Sarr to skip past his marker into the box and his curling right-footed shot looks goal bound, but it's headed clear!

DE JONG BURSTS CLEAR
We've seen plenty of De Jong at both ends of the pitch already, and he makes a fantastic driving run through the pitch to take the Netherlands from one end to the other.
They end up winning a free-kick just outside the right-hand corner of the area. Berghuis whips in a left-footed cross rather than shooting, but Senegal clear.

DE JONG SQUANDERS HUGE CHANCE
Very good tempo to this game, and it's gone from one end to the other again. This time Everton's Gueye leads the attack and manages to win a corner with a blocked cross from the byline.
But the Dutch clear again and immediately launch a counter-attack which should have them in front!
Gakpo tees up De Jong, who just has to beat the keeper, but the midfielder hesitates, takes too many touches, and Senegal recover to clear! Breathless.

DUTCH THREATEN
The Dutch make progress down the right, but Mendy is in the right place at the right time to clear the danger from inside the area.
They soon come back again and Blind gets up at the back post for a header, but can only nod it wide.
14'
DIATTA IMPRESSES
Lovely feet from Diatta to feign his way past Blind, but De Jong covers.
Here come Senegal again, as another shot is blocked, but the offside flag was up. Bright start from the Africans.

CISSE TAKES A KNOCK
We've got a man down now. Senegal defender Cisse, who's a towering figure of a man, goes down inside his own box.
But he gets to his feet eventually and he's OK to continue.

SARR FIRES OVER
Another sighter for Senegal, as Sarr takes aim from the edge of the box, but his shot sails harmlessly over.
Chances for both sides early on, this is bubbling along nicely.

SENEGAL CHUCK IT IN THE MIXER
Senegal are throwing a few crosses into the box, and debutant goalkeeper Noppert of Heerenveen looks a little uncertain as he fails to come and claim them.

Netherlands
BIG CHANCE!
A great opportunity goes begging for the Netherlands.
A clever pass sends Gakpo in behind and he decides to cut the ball back across the box towards Bergwijn rather than shooting, but it doesn't find a team-mate and Senegal manage to scramble clear! That was a warning.

NETHERLANDS SETTLE
The Dutch clear their lines from the resulting corner and are now enjoying a spell of possession.
All in their own half, though, which Senegal will be happy enough about.

DIA TAKES AIM
Early sniff for Senegal! Dia receives a cut-back and gets a shot away inside the box, but De Jong gets across to make a block.

VALENCIA FIRES ECUADOR TO WIN
Ecuador set the pace in Group A last night by comfortably beating Qatar in the opening game of the World Cup.
Enner Valencia scored twice and had another goal disallowed as the South Americans dominated against the disappointing host nation.
Senegal and Netherlands will both be aiming to join Ecuador on top of Group A.

JANSSEN LEADS LINE
The Dutch are also missing a big name up front in Memphis Depay, who scored 12 goals for them in qualifying. He's injured, but should be back later in the tournament.
It's still a side packed with talent and big names, though, captained by Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.
And yes, that is ex-Tottenham flop Vincent Janssen up front!

SENEGAL TEAM NEWS
Of course, there's one big name missing here - Sadio Mane.
The Bayern Munich star has been ruled out of the entire tournament through injury, so it's up to Ismaila Sarr, Boulaye Dia and Krepin Diatta to provide the attacking threat.
There are a couple of Chelsea players keeping things tight at the back too: goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

RAMPANT ENGLAND THRASH IRAN
This is, of course, the second game of the day. In the first, England got their campaign off to a dream starting by hitting six goals against Iran in a 6-2 win. It's their best-ever start to a World Cup.
It was an incident-packed match, with double figures of stoppage time in both halves - read all about it in our report here:
