Blind, making his 97th cap for the Netherlands, gets free down the left but his pull-back is poor and Qatar scramble clear.

As it stands, and it is very early days, the Netherlands would top Group A thanks to a slightly better disciplinary record than Ecuador - that's the fair play rule in action.

And that means kick-off is almost upon us. The Netherlands have NEVER gone out in the group stage of any World Cup and only a defeat today would put that record at risk.

The atmosphere is building nicely at Al Bayt Stadium.

This was a game the Netherlands were expected to win but Ecuador were excellent and, perhaps, were unfortunate not to take all three points, as it ended 1-1.

Qatar, meanwhile, lost 3-1 to Senegal as they crashed out of the tournament.

Van Gaal stresses the Netherlands have to believe they can win the World Cup.

"I think you always have to identify the goal, the purpose for which you are here," said the Dutch manager.

"Then you can work your way towards that purpose. If you don't identify that purpose and say 'the last 16 or the quarter-finals is enough', that isn't the right way to do things."

Should the Netherlands finish second in Group A and England top their group, the two European heavyweights would face off in what would be a crunch match in the last-16.
