We’ve finished the starter, now it’s time for the main course as holders Germany open up their 2018 campaign against lovers-of-last-16 exits Mexico. A fascinating encounter is in store as we size up another World Cup favourite. France and Argentina looked ropey yesterday, while Portugal and Spain hardly damaged their credentials with their 3-3 draw on Friday. It’s time to see what Germany are made of too, before we are treated to Brazil against Switzerland later…

End of 2nd Half
FT
There's the full-time whistle!!!
Wow. The holders are beaten. Arguably Mexico's biggest ever World Cup win, while Germany have lost their WC opener for the first time since 1982.
What. A. Shock.
90+3'
Ochoa collects a cross from deep and he takes his time before hoofing it away.
90+2'
Neuer is up for a corner! And he's staying up...
90+2'
Germany just trying to pick out holes in this Mexico defence. Patient, patient build-up but a pass from Muller on the edge of the area is straight through to Ochoa.
90'
WIDE! An almighty scramble in the Mexico box and it falls to Brandt on the edge of the area... but he fires JUST wide. So, so close.
THREE minutes added on!
88'
WIDE! Huge chance for Gomez! He somehow heads wide with a free header from 10 yards out. Camera cuts to Germany players all over the pitch - they know the level of scrutiny they'll come under after this match, even if they do salvage a draw.
86'
Werner goes off with Brandt coming on to replace Germany's No 9.
85'
Frustrated figures all over the pitch in white - this time it's Hummels who gets a yellow for a late challenge on Alvarez. All that after Reus sees an attempt saved easily by Ochoa.
83'
Muller claws back Herrera and is booked for his troubles. Just not their day, so far............
82'
WIDE! It's a brilliant effort from Layun, but he fires just wide of the far post with Neuer scrambling over to his right.
81'
Germany's defence is once more all over the place, but it's such a poor ball from Jimenez with Mexico in a 3v2 situation. Screams of 'GIVE IT' but he passes too late, and Hummels intercepts.
79'
Time is running out. And it's time for Germany to press the button.
On comes Mario Gomez.
Off goes Plattenhardt.
78'
OVER! Almost a dreamy goal from Layun as he leads Mexico on a one-man counter. There was no team-mate near him so he opts to go alone, and he only ends up firing a yard or so over the bar.
77'
Wave after wave of Germany attackes now, but Mexico are still standing strong.
76'
WIDE! Kroos tries to guide the ball into the bottom corner, but it's wide of the mark.
75'
Marquez also becomes just the third player to play in five World Cups, after Antonio Carbajal (Mexico) and Lothar Matthäus (Germany). Buffon was the only other name to feature in five squads, though he did not feature at 1998.
73'
This gives Mexico the perfect chance to regain their composure, and just quell the Germany storm. Huge 20 minutes coming up.
On comes 39-year-old Marquez - who becomes the first player to captain his nation at five World Cups. FIVE. Wow.
72'
This is getting SO tense now... Germany are piling forward, but it's no dice this time around as Reus volleys over from an acute angle.
Break in play with Gallardo down receiving some treatment after taking a Reus cross to the face.
70'
Hernandez goes down all too easily and there's no sign that VAR are even checking that. It was the right decision from the referee in the first place.
69'
Germany just upping the ante now... but down the other end Hernandez goes down in the box! VAR time?
