LATE SZOBOSZLAI EQUALISER DELAYS PORTUGAL WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION
Portugal thought they had secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup before a stoppage-time equaliser by Dominik Szoboszlai delayed the celebrations and secured a crucial point for Hungary.
The Magyars shocked the home crowd in Lisbon and opened the scoring early in the half through a powerful header by Attila Szalai.
Portugal equalised around 15 minutes later after a cross played by Nelson Semedo was tapped in by Ronaldo. The goal meant another record for the Portuguese talisman, as he is now the all-time top goalscorer in World Cup qualifying history.
In added time of the first half, Ronaldo added a second as a fantastic cross by Nuno Mendes was met by the captain at the back post, as he placed a nice finish past the Hungary goalkeeper to put the hosts ahead.
Roberto Martinez's side hit the woodwork twice in the second half and spurned several chances, which they were made to regret in the dying minutes as Liverpool's Szoboszlai put the ball into an empty net at the back post after some good play by substitute Daniel Lukacs.
The draw means that Portugal remain five points clear at the top of Group F, but still have not guaranteed automatic qualification for the World Cup.
They can secure qualification next month when they take on the Republic of Ireland in Dublin. Hungary sit second in the table, one point ahead of the Republic of Ireland.
