GERMANY PUT ON A SHOW THRASHING SLOVAKIA
Leroy Sane scored a brace and Florian Wirtz produced a fantastic performance as Germany slammed Slovakia 6-0 to ensure a place in next summer’s World Cup.
Coming into the crucial qualifier under pressure for their substandard display in beating Luxembourg 2-0 on Friday, this was a performance - knowing that defeat would send them to the play-offs - to renew belief in the Germany national side.
Even before falling behind Slovakia barely got out of their half and the pressure finally told when Nick Woltemade headed home Joshua Kimmich’s cross after 18 minutes, with Serge Gnabry adding a second from a perfect through-ball from heavily criticised midfielder Leon Goretzka.
Then came two outrageous assists from Wirtz, a pitching wedge lob and then a curling cross, both finding Sane perfectly in stride and on each occasion the former Manchester City forward converted with aplomb - the second time with an athletic half-volley with the outside of his boot.
The party mood was only increased as locally based substitutes Ridle Baku and Assan Ouedraogo added to the scoreline in the second half.
The result means Group A runners up, Slovakia, will need to win a two-stage play-off to qualify for the World Cup, with the semi-final taking place on March 26.
