SPAIN RUN RIOT TO ALL BUT BOOK WORLD CUP SPOT
Spain edged ever closer to next year’s FIFA World Cup after a thumping 4-0 win on the road against Georgia.
Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres were on the scoresheet in a comfortable evening for Luis de la Fuente’s side, while Georgia’s qualification journey came to a brutal end.
Spain dominated the early exchanges and their immediate pressure paid off after 11 minutes, as they were awarded a penalty via VAR following a handball from Torres’ cross. Real Sociedad striker Oyarzabal made no mistake from the spot as he coolly slipped his effort into the bottom-right corner.
Just over 10 minutes later, Spain found a second when Arsenal midfielder Zubimendi ran through the Georgia defence and onto Fabian Ruiz’s neat pass, before poking beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
With the wind in their sails, Spain added a third through former Manchester City winger Torres, who tapped home from close range after meeting Oyarzabal’s cross.
The trend continued in the second half, when Oyarzabal grabbed his second and Spain’s fourth with a header just after an hour played, as Spain struck four goals in back-to-back matches.
Spain's passage to next summer’s World Cup finals is nearly confirmed - which would be the 13th consecutive time they have qualified for the tournament.
As long as Spain do not lose by seven goals or more when they meet Turkey on Tuesday, they will finish top of the group and confirm their place in the World Cup.
