Belarus v Scotland result - Che Adams on target as Steve Clarke's men win in World Cup qualifying

After a creditable goalless draw away to Denmark, Scotland ground out a win behind closed doors in Zalaegerszeg, a goal and an own goal – from Che Adams and Zakhar Volkov respectively – were enough to see off Belarus.

The first half was not of a high standard, Scotland dominating possession but creating little. Then, just before the break, John McGinn delivered superbly from the right, Scott McTominay headed back across, and Adams slid in to give his side the lead.

Belarus offered little more in the second half, Scotland keeping the ball well before, on 65 minutes, a sharp move down the left led to Volkov sticking Billy Gilmour's cross into his own net with McTominay lurking.

From there, Steve Clarke's men saw out the game easily enough and they now sit joint-top of Group C with Denmark.

Next for Scotland come two home matches, Greece and Belarus visiting Hampden Park in October. Two more wins, and they will have a terrific chance of reaching their first World Cup since France 98.

But their next match is massive: Greece at home. Win that, and a win in the next against Belarus would take them pretty close.

Scotland needed to win and have. They and Denmark top Group C with four points from two games.

Can't understand why he's being penalised, and is booked.

Scotland could really do with finding a centre-forward. McTominay's ability to score takes some of the pressure off, but an attacking focal point would make such a difference.

Scotland will be really pleased with their night's work.

Lennon Miller replaces McTominay, on which point I owe him an apology: he two represents a Serie a side – though he's yet to make his Udinese debut.

A bit more risk and tempo would be nice, but they've used their superior technical ability to dominate the game and stayed patient when the goal didn't come right away.

Denmark now lead Greece 3-0; Scotland meet them next. If they even split the double-header, they'll have a pretty solid chance of taking second; four points or more and they've a decent go of finishing top.

McTominay slides into space for Robertson, down the left, he crosses low, the ball arriving beautifully into Adams' stride ... except he opts not to shoot first time, instead taking a touch and looking to round the keeper, instead running out of angle, and seeing his shot cleared off the line. If you're doing that already, you've got to finish high to take the defender out of the equation.

But his low cross is cleared. Scotland, though, maintain pressure, McTominay slipping a lovely little pass in behind for Robertson, who cut back low ... and Adams can't quite get there.

This has been relatively competent from Scotland. The cross seems to be coming back into football, and two excellent ones, both from the ambipedal McGinn, have made the difference here.

Adams cuts in from inside-left, ignores McTominay, shifts it to make an angle around Parkhomenko, and curls low; Lapoukhov gets down to save easily enough;

Hickey and Christie replace Johnston and Doak, Clarke going for experience as he protects what he has.

Volkov and Pechenin depart; Demchenko and Malkevich arrive.

Hasn't developed into the player he hinted at becoming, but he's done very well tonight, the best player on the park. But it's his Napoli teammate, McTominay, on the ball, and he's fouled by Kalinin; Gilmour wastes the free-kick.

Denmark now leads Greece 2-0. The way things stand, they and Scotland will be joint-top of the group at full time.

To lose from here would be spectacular. Belarus are dreadful.
