This year's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand is bigger than ever before, underlining the huge growth the women's game has seen in recent years. The 32-team format is in use this year as the tournament is joint-hosted for the first time. But how many Women's World Cups have there been overall, and who is the all-time top scorer in the tournament?

Lack of England goals 'not a concern' for Greenwood ahead of Denmark test

The 2023 Women’s World Cup is the biggest ever, with 32 teams competing in an newly-expanded format for the biggest prize in the women’s game.
Huge crowds have packed out stadiums in Australia and New Zealand and bumper television audiences have tuned in, underlining the massive surge in popularity that the women’s game has earned in recent years.
More eyes may be on the Women’s World Cup than ever before, but the event itself is far from new.
This year marks the ninth instalment of the tournament, which was first held in 1991 in China.
The 2023 edition broke new ground as the first to be co-hosted by two countries and the first held in the Southern Hemisphere.

Women’s World Cups

  • 1991 Hosts: China; Winners: United States
  • 1995 Hosts: Sweden; Winners: Norway
  • 1999 Hosts: United States; Winners: United States
  • 2003 Hosts: United States; Winners: Germany
  • 2007 Hosts: China; Winners: Germany
  • 2011 - Hosts: Germany; Winners: Japan
  • 2015 - Hosts: Canada; Winners: United States
  • 2019 Hosts: France; Winners: United States
  • 2023 Hosts: Australia and New Zealand; Winners: TBC
The United States are therefore the most successful country in Women's World Cup history with four titles, followed by Germany on two and Norway and Japan with one each.
However, the Americans don't boast the tournament's all-time top goalscorer.
That accolade is held by Brazilian great Marta, who netted 17 goals over five World Cup outings.

Who are the top scorers in Women's World Cup history?

  • 17 goals - Marta (Brazil)
  • 14 goals - Birgit Prinz (Germany) and Abby Wambach (United States)
  • 12 goals - Michelle Akers (United States)
  • 11 goals - Cristiane (Brazil), Sun Wen (China) and Bettina Wiegmann (Germany)
This 2023 Women's World Cup final will take place in Sydney on August 20.
