Arsenal 1-2 Lyon: UEFA Women's Champions League result as record holders take advantage in semi-final after Kadidiatou Diani, Melchie Dumornay goals

Melchie Dumornay’s strike proved a sucker punch for Arsenal, just four minutes after The Gunners got back on level terms, and Lyon hold a big advantage going into next Sunday’s semi-final second leg in France.

Lyon began the better side and took the lead through Kadidiatou Diani, who raced onto an Ellie Carpenter through ball to drive home past Manuela Zinsberger. Though it was initially ruled out for offside, VAR showed she was just played on by opposite full-back Emily Fox.

Dumornay came close to doubling the lead with an impudent effort from 40 yards when Zinsberger was out of goal, but after that, it was almost all Arsenal, with Alessia Russo hitting the bar with a header just before the break.

In the second period, the ball lived in the Lyon half and both Beth Mead and Frida Maanum rued the good chances they had to get Arsenal level before an unexpected penalty was given via VAR. Christiane Endler missed the ball with a punch and connected with Leah Wiliamson, allowing Mariona Caldentey to net from 12 yards out.

Seven minutes from time, Dumornay took a fine ball from substitute Amel Majri in her stride and raced through the middle of the Arsenal defence before coolly guiding home to snatch the win.

"They get them back into the game with the penalty and then to be so naive four minutes later to concede a goal once you’re back into the game against a team that it will be difficult to go away and get a result, the way in which they did, is quite frustrating," Williams said on TNT Sports.

"And I’m sure the Arsenal players will be frustrated at that scenario."

The sides will play again next Sunday.

Blackstenius ran onto a long ball through the middle but the keeper ran out of her box to clear.

Diani is replaced by Becho and Svava is on for Bacha.

But Zinsberger comes out bravely to dive at her feet.

And Majri who played Diani in, just failed to get to the follow up.

The team and crowd have failed to recover after that sucker punch strike.

Pelova and Walti come on for Russo and Foord.

They are so ruthless! It has been all Arsenal and they deservedly got back level, but taking a fine ball from Majri in stride Dumornay drives through the middle of the Arsenal defence and guide the ball past Zinsberger.

She shoots wildly when she may have been better trying to find Blackstenius in the area.

She calmly sends Endler the wrong way from the spot and puts Arsenal level.

There was no appeal from Arsenal.

Endler caught Williamson with a punch after Russo met the ball in front of her. It seems a harsh decision.

Was Williamson blocked as she went for the ball. The referee is looking at the sideline monitor. We know what this usually means.

But the header is directed wide of the goal.

McCabe launched a free kick into the box but the keeper came out in traffic to collect the ball.
