Paris Saint-Germain v Lyon live – Women’s Champions League latest as Dumornay doubles aggregate lead

On 14 May 2015, in front of 17,147 people in Berlin, FFC Frankfurt beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Women’s Champions League final. Since then every WCL has been won by either Lyon or Barcelona, and that sequence will continue in 2023-24.

Lyon, who beat Barcelona in the finals of 2019 and 2022, booked a meeting in Bilbao on 25 May by winning 2-1 in Paris to seal a 5-3 aggregate victory.

The brilliant Melchie Dumornay finished PSG off with a superb goal in the 81st minute. Even before that, when there was only one goal between the sides, Lyon kept PSG at arm’s length with a formidably good defensive performance.

Selma Bacha had given Lyon an early lead in the second leg, surprising Constance Picaud at the near post following a short corner. PSG equalised – and halved the aggregate deficit – just before the break with their only shot on target of the whole the game, an emphatic finish from the tireless Tabitha Chawinga.

That seemed to set up an explosive second half. But Lyon’s class and experience – especially their winning experience – were the difference. After a number of near misses, including a couple of fine saves from Picaud, Dumornay landed the decisive blow.

It was another near miss for PSG, who just can’t get past Lyon in Ligue 1 or the WCL. The story is painfully familiar. Two years ago, at the same stage, Lyon beat PSG 5-3 on aggregate after winning 3-2 at home and 2-1 away. They will hope history continues to repeat: they beat Barcelona 3-1 in the final that year.

PSG are huffing and puffing without much success. Lyon's defending has been immaculate.

Lyon scored three goals in six minutes last week. PSG need two in seven.

Perle Morroni comes on for the outstanding Selma Bacha.

Karchaoui dances into the area after a superb passing move, only for Bacha to step across and make a goal-saving interception. Great defending. A goal then would have made life very interesting.

Lieke Martens and Korbin Albert replace Jackie Groenen and Sandy Baltimore.

Lyon are heading to another WCL final! Becho's cross from the right is touched off beautifully by Majri towards Dumornay, who calmly slides the ball past Picaud from 15 yards. That's a terrific goal.

They are keeping PSG at arm's length, using all their experience to control the tempo of the game. Football is a funny old game, and anything can happen, but right now PSG don't look like getting the goal they need to take the tie to extra-time.

Baltimore needs some treatment after being caught by a defender. PSG can't generate any momentum.

This is it: 20 minutes to score or face more Champions League heartbreak. Karchaoui has a couple of decent runs on the left; she's been PSG's most dangerous attacker all afternoon.

Picaud inexplicably spills an up and under back towards her own goal, but the off-balance Gilles is unable to reach the loose ball and poke it into the net.

Lyon have had multiple chances to put PSG away in the last 15 minutes.

She probably should have done better wuith the first shot, which she spilled to her right, but she did brilliantly to push away a stinging follow-up from Dumornay.

She beat the keeper Picaud to a loose ball near the left edge of the six-yard box, turned and floated a chip from a very tight angle that beat the defenders on the line but drifted onto the roof of the net.

PSG win a corner on the left, which is headed away as far as Samoura. Her long-range shot is blocked and spins towards Geyoro, whose adroit volley from 15 yards is too close to Endler.

Diani finds a bit of space near the byline in the area and slides a low cross into the six-yard box. It nicks off Groenen, stretching towards her own goal, and rolls right across the face of goal. That could easily have turned into something nasty for PSG.

Karchaoui joins Carpenter in the book for putting her arm into the face of Van de Donk. A bit harsh.
