Netherlands v Germany - UEFA Nations League result as Cody Gakpo hits late equaliser against Jurgen Klopp's side

Neither Xavi nor Jurgen Klopp could chalk up a win in their first game in charge of new sides as the Netherlands came from behind to draw 1-1 with Germany in the UEFA Nations League.

The Dutch thought they had taken the lead after 15 minutes when Virgil van Dijk flicked home a perfectly executed corner routine, only for the strike to be contentiously ruled out after VAR intervention for an offside against Brian Brobbey.

That was followed by the visitors controversially taking the lead, continuing to play after Brobbey had gone down with a hamstring injury and working the ball to Felix Nmecha, who found the far corner from inside the six-yard box.

Oranje dominated after the break but debutant Mexx Meerdink was thwarted with one chance, while he somehow could not convert into an empty net from just inches out when stretching to reach Denzel Dumfries’ powerful cross.

Meerdink, a substitute for Brobbey in the first half, had another shot pushed onto the post as the Dutch looked destined to lose, but they got the equaliser their performance deserved late on when Cody Gakpo acrobatically volleyed home Ruben van Bommel’s deep cross in injury time.

Here's what happened as Craig Bellamy's side went up against Cristiano Ronaldo and co, coming away with a 1-0 defeat.

Greece pulled off a sensational comeback in the other game in this group, with Tasos Douvikas scoring in the 94th minute to earn a 1-0 win over Serbia.

That puts them in top spot, while the Netherlands and Germany have a point apiece

It could have been another! A free header for Til, left unmarked in the box. He sends his shot back across goal, but past the post

IT HAD BEEN COMING! Van Bommel puts a terrific ball into the box and Gakpo meets it with a stunning back post volley! It's all square!

We're into them

Another Van Bommel strike from distance, this time a whipped effort that bends around the defence and requires pushing to safety by the goalkeeper

He tries his luck with a daisy-cutter from the edge of the area that hits a trailing leg and goes for a corner

A close-range header comes straight at the goalkeeper, with Van Hecke nodding it down into the ground and into Ter Stegen's gloves

Summerville and Reijnders are replaced by Ruben Van Bommel and Guus Til

A ball comes into the box from the German left. It's cleared, but straight against the head of Ebnoutalib, with the ball bouncing fortuitously wide. The could have gone anywhere.

Serge Gnaby and Yannik Engelhardt come on for Amiri and Adeyemi

Less than 15 minutes remain in Amsterdam. The Netherlands have had 17 shots compared to Germany's nine, with seven on target. They have not found a way through yet, though.

Meerdink simply cannot find a way past the German goalkeeper! On this occasion, he powerfully strikes towards the near post, but sees his strike pushed onto the woodwork thanks to an excellent stop

The German No. 11 gets a yellow card for a really poorly timed tackle on Dumfries, who is clattered into well after the ball had gone.

The Dutch player reacts angrily, almost understandably so.

Dumfries lashes a glorious ball into the six-yard box. It's begging to be tapped home. Meerdink dives in and gets a foot on it, but the ball somehow flies wide. Incredible.

Kevin Schade's game is over, as it is for Felix Nmecha. They're replaced by Anton Stach and Chris Fuhrich.
