OYARZABAL STRIKES AGAIN AS SPAIN BEAT ENGLAND
Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner for Spain as Luis de la Fuente’s side secured a 3-2 win over England at Wembley in their UEFA Nations League opener.
Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal were both on the scoresheet, but a penalty miss from the former and mistakes from Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly ultimately cost The Three Lions.
Yamal took just two minutes to open the scoring, as he snatched the ball from Guehi before slotting past James Trafford in the England net to earn the visitors the lead.
Spain had three big chances to double their lead through Ferran Torres (twice) and Dani Olmo, but a big save from Trafford and two key misses kept England in the game.
The Three Lions were back in it when Anthony Gordon found the back of the net, finishing a wonderful end-to-end move, and three minutes later they were ahead when Kane’s header deflected off Marc Cucurella and beyond Unai Simon.
England had the chance to give themselves a two-goal buffer when they were awarded a penalty after Jude Bellingham was fouled by Rodri, but Kane missed from the spot for his country for the first time since the World Cup quarter-final against France in 2022.
Thomas Tuchel’s side would go on to regret the miss, as Spain equalised through Alex Baena following another defensive error when O’Reilly’s backwards pass was cut out by Olmo just outside the box.
And just like he did in the UEFA Euro 2024 final, Oyarzabal snatched the winner against England with a delicately dinked finish to beat Trafford.
The win meant that Spain extended their unbeaten run to 39 games, while England will look to bounce back from defeat against Czechia on Tuesday, September 29.

'AS GOOD AS WE'VE PLAYED IN A LONG, LONG TIME' - KANE
Speaking of Kane, the England skipper has given his thoughts on the game.
"I spoke before that we reached good levels at the World Cup but didn't quite put a full 90 minutes together. Probably similar again today," he told ITV.
"We had a couple of good moments though, that period was as good as we've played in a long, long time and that's the standard we know we can reach.
We're playing against the world champions, the European champions, and we went toe-to-toe.
"On another day for sure we'd have won that game. We have to take the positives from it. We have to dust ourselves down and go again in a few days."

BALLON D’OR BATTLE
Have we seen the best of the Ballon d’Or favourites?
Both Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal are up for the award and, naturally, both found the back of the net for their respective nations.
Kane is the favourite for the award, but will he become the first English player since Michael Owen in 2001 to win it?

GORDON REACTS
This is what goalscorer Anthony Gordon had to say at full-time.
"I think it was a bit of a missed chance," he told ITV.
"I thought it was a great game to watch and to play in, some of the attacking play was at the highest level.
In a game like that mistakes cost you.
"You always feel like it's you giving it away rather than them winning it. But of course you could argue both teams because they were as good as us and we were as good as them.
"I'm just gutted about the mistakes."

TOUGH START
England face defeat in their opening Nations League game as Spain continue their dominance over The Three Lions.
Oyarzabal was once again the hero for the world and European champions in this fixture, as Thomas Tuchel's side failed to bounce back from disappointment following their World Cup exit.
The hosts had the chance for a two-goal buffer when Harry Kane missed a penalty, but the visitors could have had three or four before that.
England were mostly clinical in front of goal, but mistakes ultimately cost them this time.
