A section of United fans, unhappy with the 4-3-3 system adopted by Queiroz and manager Alex Ferguson over the past year, called for a return to the four-man midfield during Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Blackburn Rovers.
Queiroz was quoted as telling Portuguese paper O Jogo: "We played for the first time in 4-4-2 and the people in the stands were shouting for: '4-4-2'!
"We started with this system, which the public had asked for so much and ... we lose. That's why soccer is a game in which imagination and, sometimes, stupidity have no limits."
Queiroz expects a tough time from Benfica, who beat Lille 1-0 two weeks ago while United had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Villarreal in their Group D opener.
"I've seen Benfica's most recent games and the first analysis is that they have gained confidence," said Queiroz.
"It's a squad with a defined game plan and an identity. And, above all, they're now getting some good results," he said.
"If there is a group in the Champions League where there could be surprises and good games ... it's ours. Benfica as well as Villarreal or Lille could cause an upset."
