Glasner 'fury' at mooted Guehi sale
Oliver Glasner’s "fury" ensured Crystal Palace kept hold of captain Marc Guehi on deadline day after a transfer to Liverpool collapsed, the Guardian reports, while the Daily Mirror also said the manager threatened to quit if the player was sold.
Guehi was widely expected to complete a move to the Premier League champions on Monday, but Glasner ensured the defender would remain a Palace player for now.
The Guardian writes: "It is understood Glasner was extremely unhappy at the decision to accept Liverpool’s offer and reiterated his plea not to sell his captain on the final day of the transfer window in heated talks with the club’s chair, Steve Parish, on Monday evening.
"There were even fears that the Austrian, who led Palace to their first trophy when they won the FA Cup in May, could step down after making it clear that they must keep hold of Guehi if they are to have a successful season.
"That, and their failure to bring in a direct replacement in time, eventually persuaded Parish to inform Liverpool the deal was off despite admitting after their victory over Arne Slot’s side in the Community Shield that he would probably have to be sold this month to avoid losing the 25-year-old for free next summer."
Martinez and Isak reaction
The papers have run comment articles reacting to a busy transfer deadline day on Monday. The Telegraph’s Matt Law says Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has "trashed his reputation" after a move away from the club failed to materialise.
"It is not hard to pick the so-called winners of the transfer window given Liverpool’s impressive summer spendathon, but it is even easier to identify the biggest loser – step forward Emiliano Martínez," Law writes.
The Daily Mail says Manchester United chose to sign goalkeeper Senne Lammens instead of Martinez due to their inability to sell Jadon Sancho permanently.
Sancho joined Aston Villa on loan but that denied United the opportunity to raise funds to bring Martinez in the other direction.
The Mail adds: "United were hopeful of securing the sale of Sancho, who is due to become a free agent next summer.
"Martinez's £200,000-a-week wages meant that United would have had to get a transfer fee for Sancho but he preferred a loan.
"The groundwork for a move for Lammens had been laid for some time and the final touches were sealed on Monday as he boarded a private plane from Antwerp to Manchester."
Elsewhere, with Alexander Isak’s switch from Newcastle to Liverpool confirmed late on Monday night, The Times’ Paul Joyce says the player will now have to prove he was worth the hassle at Anfield.
With Isak having refused to play for Newcastle to force through a transfer, The Telegraph’s Jason Burt said "bad behaviour pays" after Yoane Wissa had also acted similarly.
"The transfer window is broken," Burt adds. "It is not fit for purpose, even though this summer’s will break all records. It does not work. In fact, it almost feels ungovernable.
"How else to describe a system in which players effectively go on strike to try to force a move and there are disputes over "gentleman’s agreements" with arguments they are only there to be reneged on – how is that good management?"
