'Furious' Marc Guehi could give up Crystal Palace captaincy after Liverpool move blocked - Paper Round

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi may give up the captain’s armband in protest at being denied a move to Liverpool, while Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling is content to wait until January for a transfer rather than move abroad. Elsewhere, Everton were unwilling to match Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s increased wage demands, and Manchester United considered a swoop for Danny Welbeck.

Guehi ‘furious’ over Liverpool move collapse

Marc Guehi is angry with Crystal Palace after his proposed move to Liverpool fell through.
Palace were unable to ratify a sale because Oliver Glasner might have resigned, and a replacement was not secured, according to the Mirror.
The paper writes: "Marc Guehi is reportedly considering stepping down as Crystal Palace captain after being left furious at the club blocking his move to Liverpool.
"Guehi looked set to join Liverpool on transfer deadline day after Palace chairman Steve Parish went against the wishes of manager Oliver Glasner to accept their £35 million offer for the defender. He completed a medical in London and was due to fly up to Merseyside to join Alexander Isak with The Reds.
"However, Parish ultimately changed his mind at the last minute, pulling the plug on the transfer after Glasner threatened to resign because a replacement hadn’t been signed. Palace had agreed a loan move with Brighton for Igor Julio, but the Brazilian ended up choosing West Ham instead."

Sterling will not consider move abroad

Raheem Sterling remains with Chelsea, and there is little hope of him moving on in the near future.
The Evening Standard believes the 30-year-old forward has no interest in moving abroad, and may look to leave in January.
The paper explains: "Raheem Sterling is not open to a move to Saudi Arabia, Turkey or the United States and will remain at Chelsea with an eye to an exit in January.
"Standard Sport understands the 30-year-old is unlikely to be reintegrated with the Chelsea first team and will continue training with the so-called ‘bomb squad’ at The Blues’ Cobham training ground.
"Chelsea failed to arrange an exit before the deadline for Sterling, who wanted to join a London club.
"Sterling, who still believes he can add to his 82 England caps, does not wish to relocate from the capital with his young family, but a move could not be sorted before the end of deadline day despite some interest from Fulham and consideration by West Ham.
"One possibility would be for the club to terminate his contract, but it is unclear how likely it is that Chelsea would give that serious consideration."

Calvert-Lewin wanted pay rise to stay at Everton

Dominic Calvert-Lewin wanted an increased wage in order to remain with Everton, believing he could secure a move to an elite club.
Ultimately, the striker signed for Leeds United, with Everton not willing to match his demands.
The Athletic reports: "They had been open to retaining free-agent duo Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the right terms, but in each case there was too wide a gap for the parties to bridge in talks.
"It was assumed Doucoure was heading to Saudi Arabia [which he eventually did, joining Neom] and would more than double his Everton salary of around £100,000.
"Calvert-Lewin wanted a significant raise on his £90,000 a week wages of last season and a long-term deal, and had felt his unattached status would advance his chances of earning a move to an elite club. He was now signed for promoted Leeds United."

United considered Welbeck swoop

The Sun claims that Manchester United had looked to bring Danny Welbeck back from Brighton.
The veteran forward was put forward as a potential summer transfer, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe was reluctant to offer a two-year deal.
The paper states: "Manchester United attempted to bring Danny Welbeck back to Old Trafford for the second summer running.
"The Brighton striker, 34, was eyed as a striker target during Erik ten Hag's final summer in charge.
"That came in a desperate bid to try and fix the club's goalscoring woes, which only got worse across the 2024/25 campaign as United scored just 44 goals - the 16th lowest in the division.
"Consequently, Red Devils transfer chiefs backed current boss Ruben Amorim with a £200m strikeforce in the form of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
"But early on in the summer, United had seriously considered making a move for a secondary striker after missing out on Liam Delap to Chelsea.
"However, Ineos chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe was hesitant to offer a two-year deal to a player who turns 35 in November, with a one-year plus-one deal being discussed."
