TEN-MAN MANCHESTER UNITED STUN ARSENAL ON PENALTIES AFTER DIOGO DALOT RED CARD
Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was the hero as 10-man Manchester United produced a heroic defensive display to clinch a penalty shoot-out triumph over Arsenal following an incident-packed third round clash at Emirates Stadium.
The tie finished 1-1 after extra-time with Joshua Zirkzee firing the winning spot kick to seal a 5-3 success after Kai Haverts saw his effort saved.
The tie burst into life following a dour first 45 when Bruno Fernandes fired a stunning first-time shot into the corner.
United’s game-plan appeared to be working a treat as they followed the blueprint from their impressive Premier League draw at Liverpool, but that all turned sour when Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second bookable offence just past the hour.
Gabriel almost immediately levelled for the hosts before Martin Odegaard saw his 72nd-minute penalty brilliantly saved by Bayindir.
Arsenal pushed for the remainder of normal time and throughout extra time but couldn’t find the finish and were left to lament their woes in front of goal as United held their nerves in the shoot-out to book a round four home clash with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City in round four.

BRUNO FERNANDES: "Obviously given the circumstances of the game, we go with one less (sent off), so we suffered a lot.
" We had some big moments for this goalkeeper (points to Bayindir), with the first penalty save (from Odegaard in normal time) and then again now (in the shoot-out). It is tough being a second goalkeeper, but when he gets his chance he is top class for us. He truly deserves this moment."
He added: "We will celebrate, but we need to back it up, back up (performances) after Liverpool and Arsenal. Now, we have to do it with Old Trafford, to bring again a big atmosphere and bring it back for the club, doing it every week, every game and every three days if needed."

ARSENAL RUE MISSED CHANCES AS 10-MAN RED DEVILS DIG DEEP TO KEEP HOPES OF RETAINING TROPHY ALIVE
Despite the Premier League draw at Anfield and a heroic effort with 10-men here, Manchester United have now failed to win any of their last six matches in normal time.
However, the holders have progressed past the third round of the FA Cup for the 11th straight campaign.
Indeed, Ruben Amorim will take great pride in clear improvement in the last two games versus big guns like Liverpool and Arsenal, but his team will now need to deliver as an attacking force in home matches with Southampton, Brighton and Rangers in the UEFA Europa League.
Meanwhile, Arsenal suffer more woe after the disappointment of the league draw at Brighton and surprise home loss to Newcastle in the first-leg of the EFL Cup semi final.
Arteta will be further concerned by his mounting injury list, particularly in attack, as Gabriel Jesus was carried off on a stretcher in the first half and could join Bukayo Saka and Ethan Nwaneri on the sidelines.
Next up it’s a return to Premier League action with Arsenal at home to Tottenham in the North London derby on Wednesday evening. Manchester United host rock-bottom Southampton on Thursday night.
