Como made an astonishing final-day leap into the top four in Serie A after Lucas Da Cunha’s second-half double sealed a big win over Cremonese to relegate Jamie Vardy’s side.
Cesc Fabregas’ men began the night in fifth place, needing other results to go their way on a frantic final round of the season.
That was exactly what transpired, as although Roma comfortably defeated Verona to seal their return to the Champions League after seven years, Milan imploded at home to Cagliari by surrendering the lead to lose 2-1 and plummet into sixth place.
Juventus’ clash with rivals Torino was delayed an hour due to fan disturbances, but the result proved irrelevant long before it was over due to Como’s superior head-to-head record over the Bianconeri – this being the primary tiebreaker in Serie A.
The Lariani players spent anxious minutes at full-time looking at their phones and awaiting the full-time whistle at San Siro, before rushing onto the pitch in wild celebration when Cagliari’s shock win confirmed they would compete in the Champions League in their first-ever European campaign.
Fabregas’ side did their part with relative ease, despite facing a Cremonese side fighting for their lives and requiring a win and a result to go their way in Lecce to avoid the drop.

'Como find a way through' - Rodríguez gives the visitors the lead

Jesus Rodriguez’s deflected strike put the visitors in front in a dull first half, but the game exploded into life after the break.
Anastasios Douvikas doubled Como’s lead to seemingly put the game beyond doubt, only for Federico Bonazzoli to net a penalty won by Vardy as Cremonese mustered an immediate response.
The game swung firmly in the visitors’ favour after a controversial penalty was awarded following a pitchside review for Matteo Bianchetti’s challenge on Douvikas. It enraged the visitors to the degree that three red cards were shown, Alberto Grassi being dismissed for dissent with substitutes David Okereke and Milan Djuric also sent off.

'It is descending into chaos' - THREE Cremonese players sent off in quick succession

Captain Da Cunha, who joined Como while they were still in Serie B, netted the spot kick to all-but end the contest before calmly slotting home his second of the night with nine minutes to go.
It was a painful end for Vardy, who came into the game in good form after scoring in back-to-back games but could not make an impact and prevent the Grigiorossi from returning to the second tier just a year on from promotion.

MILAN FACING THE ABYSS
They came into tonight in the strongest position of all to seal a top-four spot, despite a dreadful run of form at the tail end of this season.
To surrender the lead and lose at home to a Cagliari side with nothing left to play for would be a humiliation for the Rossoneri, and a costly one. They are huffing and puffing at San Siro, but can't find a way through.

GOAL! CREMONESE 1-4 COMO (DA CUNHA)
Game, set, match. Da Cunha's second of the night is a good one, steering a shot into the bottom corner from just inside the box. Como are heading to the Champions League at a canter at the moment!

THREE RED CARDS TO CREMONESE!
This has unravelled fast. Djuric was sent off but from the bench, presumably for protests. Then Grassi also sees red after exchanging words with ref Maresca. Then a third to Okereke - another sub!
This has spiralled out of control. To be quite honest, this reaction does also say a lot about that decision...
