Scott McTominay: Napoli midfielder continues ‘astonishing’ season with double as Manchester United rue departure - ‘They made a mistake’

Scott McTominay has enjoyed a new lease of life since leaving Manchester United for Italy last year, and his goals for Napoli have helped propel them towards the Serie A title. A brace against Torino at the weekend once again showcased his talents, with Old Trafford left wondering what might have been. Napoli sit three points clear of Inter in the Serie A table having beaten Torino 2-0 on Sunday.

Manchester United have been told that they "made a mistake" allowing Scott McTominay to leave the club after he scored twice in Napoli's 2-0 win over Torino on Sunday.
Napoli remain three points ahead of Inter Milan at the top of Serie A with four matches remaining, and they are enjoying a three-game winning stretch.
McTominay could be in for silverware in his first season with the club, his fortunes contrasting with those of his former team, where he plied his trade all the way up through the junior ranks.
McTominay left Old Trafford after a seven-year spell in the senior team, but has gone from strength to strength since moving to Italy. While Napoli sit top of their league table, United find themselves in 14th position in the Premier League.
His first goal on Sunday came after just seven minutes with McTominay in the right place at the right time to curl into the right-hand side of the goal via a deflection off a defender.
"He is having the dream season, and he’s scoring the goals that might just be taking Napoli to the Scudetto. Scott McTominay, magic again," said Adam Summerton on commentary.

But better was to come when McTominay netted a second in very similar fashion, Summerton calling him "unstoppable".
"You have to see it to believe it, what’s happening to this man in Italian football," he added.
"Even he can’t believe what is going on, it is incredible. Look at this, done well, see you later, I’m going on the right side… McTominay gets there first and slots it beautifully into the bottom corner. What a couple of goals he’s just scored," said Tony Dorigo.
McTominay left his boyhood club when Erik Ten Hag was in charge, with Financial Fair Play rules reportedly a part of the reason he left, as his sale is registered as pure profit.
But he has thrived playing in Italy, and has carried that form into his international appearances for Scotland too.
The 28-year-old has scored 11 times this season in Serie A, including five goals in three matches in April alone.
"He’s having a fantastic season, we know he’s an excellent player anyway, and I’ve watched plenty of Leeds versus Manchester United games where he’s scored a double against the Whites. They must be looking surely at him now thinking, what did we do?" added Dorigo.

"Quite clearly they made a mistake because McTominay has been superb. To adapt to a different culture, way of playing, lifestyle, language, you name it. And look what he’s doing, very impressive."
Summerton concluded: "Who ever could have predicted what we are seeing unfold?
"Not just having a decent or a good first season in Italian football, he is excelling in Italian football and he is driving Napoli towards the Scudetto.
"It is a quite astonishing story, the story of Scott McTominay at Naples. They adore him here. And why not?"
