How will the Serie A title be decided? What do Internazionale and Napoli need to clinch Scudetto? Can there be a play-off?

Antonio Conte's Napoli side are one win away from securing a fourth Serie A title, despite drawing with Parma on Sunday. They head into the final weekend one point ahead of Internazionale, who drew 2-2 with Lazio, and could clinch their second Italian league title in three years. They face Cagliari on the final day and will be without Conte after the manager was sent off against Parma.

Internazionale suffered a huge blow heading into the final round of Serie A action next weekend after Lazio scored a late equaliser at the San Siro to draw 2-2.
Lazio did Napoli a huge favour as Inter missed the chance to move ahead of the league leaders by a single point, leaving the Serie A title to be decided on the final day.
Pedro levelled twice for Lazio in the second half, the latter coming in the 90th minute from a penalty.
Napoli drew 0-0 with Parma, and that ensured they head into a dramatic final weekend a single point ahead of Simone Inzaghi's side.

WHAT DO INTER AND NAPOLI NEED?

Inter are also looking ahead to a UEFA Champions League final with Paris Saint-Germain, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
They could be the first Serie A team to win the league and the Champions League in the same season since they did so themselves in 2010.
To secure the league portion of that double, however, they are counting on Napoli being held to a draw or losing to Cagliari in their final match.
The last time Cagliari beat Napoli was in 2019, and the Sardinia side suffered a 4-0 loss at home to Napoli earlier in the season.
Napoli have drawn their last two games, however, and will be without manager Antonio Conte against Cagliari, after he was sent off towards the end of the game against Parma.
Should Cagliari manage to pull off that feat, then Inter will need to beat Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, to wrap up the title.
For Napoli, simply a win against Cagliari will secure their second league title in three years.
Both matches will be played at 7.45pm UK time on Friday, May 23, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

COULD THERE BE A PLAY-OFF?

In 2022, the Italian Football Federation announced a rule change that would see the title decided by a play-off should two teams finish level on points.
Previously the title was decided by head-to-head record.
In the event that Inter and Napoli finish the league level on points, a one-off play-off match would crown the winner.
The rule had been used previously before its reintroduction in 2022, and the only case of the Scudetto being decided by play-off was in 1964 when Bologna and Inter finished level on 54 points. Bologna won 2-0.

WHO CAN QUALIFY FOR EUROPE?

Napoli, Inter, and third-placed Atalanta have all qualified for the Champions League group stage next season.
Juventus, in fourth on 67 points, have Roma (66) and Lazio (65) breathing down their necks.
A win against Venezia for Juve will ensure their qualification. Roma face Torino and Lazio take on Lecce in their fixtures to decide who qualifies for the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League.
Bologna, in eighth, have already qualified for the Europa League by winning the Coppa Italia. They face an outside chance of qualifying for the Conference League via the league and should they manage to do that, then whoever finishes seventh will qualify for the Conference League play-off, whilst fifth and sixth qualify for the Europa League.
If Bologna finish outside a European placement, then the fifth-placed side will qualify for the Europa League alongside Bologna, and sixth will head to the Conference League play-off.
