This game is barely pausing for breath as Inter storm forward on the break going in search of a second goal that they thought they’d get from the spot. Lautaro wins a corner.

SAVED! Inter switch penalty takers and it’s Lautaro Martinez who steps up, but his effort is brilliantly saved low down to his right by Tatarusanu. That was actually pretty well hit, but the save is a blinder. It remains 1-1!

PENALTY! It’s a second spot-kick of the night for Inter… and if there was doubt about the first one then this looks nailed on. Darmian bursts into the box and Ballo-Toure lunges in to bring him down, getting nowhere near the ball.

Lautaro picks the ball up on the edge of the box and tries to shift into space, but he’s swallowed up by the Milan defence and the chance disappears.

Well well, what a belter of a match we’ve got on our hands here. The atmosphere is rocking, the tempo is absurdly high, and there’s space absolutely everywhere. Not to curse it or anything, but this could end up any score, it’s wild.

GOOOAAALLL!!! What a start to this game and Milan are level. A beautiful floated free-kick is screaming out for somebody to head it home. Tomori flicks his head towards it and wheels away in celebration, but it came off the head of De Vrij and is an own-goal. 1-1!

That’s nice from Leao. He wins the ball in midfield and strides forward into space before drilling a shot from range that draws a decent stop out of Handanovic.

Calhanoglu is not one for a non-celebration celebration, that’s clear. He emerges from a bundle of Inter bodies and cups his hands to his ears in the direction of his former supporters. Spicy!

GOOOAAALLL!!! Calhanoglu, the player who won the penalty, takes it… and the former Milan player slots it straight down the middle to give Inter the lead. 1-0!

There’s a very long check from VAR but the penalty does stand.

PENALTY!? What on earth happened there. Kessie looks to dart back into his own box with the ball to find space but comes under pressure and is adjudged to have committed a foul. Milan are furious, but the penalty will almost certainly stand.

Milan overcommit numbers and Inter break. It’s extremely dangerous, but Kessie and Tomori somehow deny a shot at goal. It’s all very frantic early on.
3'
End to end as Milan win the ball up high and Zlatan is in the middle waiting for the cross unmarked. The delivery is poor and the chance goes begging.
2'
Barella finds a pocket of space out on the right and whips in a dangerous cross, but Tomori clears. Strong start from Inter.

And we’re off! It will come as no surprise that AC are in their red and black and Inter are in blue and black. You knew that without seeing it didn’t you?
It's a belter of an atmosphere inside the San Siro as the players line up for team photographs and then head out to their positions. We’re all set for kick-off.
Kick-off is approaching and the fans unfurl two giant banners at either end. Inter’s celebrates last year’s title win and the fact they are champions of Italy. Milan’s says thank you to all those who helped in the fight against Covid… which is both a great sentiment and an excellent way to morally out-do your rival fans. Win-win. The whole stadium applauds the doctors and nurses who helped save so many lives in the Milan area, which was of course so heavily hit by the pandemic.
Inter are adjusting to life after Antonio Conte. The defending champions haven’t just lost their manager from last season, but are also trying to replace the goals and impact of Romelu Lukaku. But there are signs that it’s clicking into gear again, and victory over their city-rivals would bring them within four points of Milan.
But a derby loss to Inter would see Milan drift back towards the pack – the pack in this case being Inter, Atalanta and Lazio.
Another victory this evening would see AC put further distance between themselves and all except table-toppers Napoli, and a title race would be well and truly on the cards.
