Rui Costa, who retired from international football after Euro 2004, joined AC Milan in 2001 from Fiorentina.
Media reports say the 34-year-old is set to return to Benfica, the club where he started his career as a nine-year-old.
"I feel happy with the possibility of returning," he said.
"But it is still no more than a possibility, and until it is a done thing it would be stupid of me to feed an ambition I have had for 12 years."
Rui Costa left Portugal in 1994 to join Fiorentina.
