Hughes' Wales have been in outstanding form in the past year and a half having been undefeated between October 2001 and May 2003. The 2-0 loss to the USA was unfortunate as a large proportion of the first team were not playing. They currently top their European Championship qualifying group and have beaten Italy along the way in reaching their current lofty position.
For Wales, losing Hughes would be a big blow, particularly as they have a great chance to reach their first major international championship for nearly 50 years.
But Queiroz revealed to the News of the World: "Alex has been working hard for a long time to get Mark on board.
"He tried to get him in November but it was difficult because Hughes was asking too much money."
With Queiroz having replaced Vicente del Bosque as manager of Madrid, United need a replacement. United would be a tempting target for Hughes as he was part of the successful team of early nineties and has a healthy relationship with Ferguson.
The Welsh Football Association president Des Shanklin however believes Hughes will stay. Shanklin told the News of the World:
"It is not surprising United are interested in Mark, given his track record over the past two years. My opinion is that Mark is very happy with his arrangement with us.
"I spoke with him at a three-hour meeting on Friday and he's given no indication of a possible move to United." Shanklin continued.
