Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham result - Brennan Johnson and Palhinha fire Spurs top of Premier League table with impressive victory at Etihad

Tottenham Hotspur scored twice in the closing moments of the first half as Thomas Frank's vibrant side coasted to a third Premier League win over Manchester City in their past five visits to the Etihad Stadium with a merited 2-0 victory.

After resisting some early pressure by Pep Guardiola's men, Brennan Johnson swept home the opener on 35 minutes from Richarlison's cross with VAR overruling an initial offside flag after goalkeeper James Trafford was beaten by the power of the finish.

There was no need for VAR for the second goal in added time in the first half as Trafford's pass out from his goal was intercepted by Pape Sarr with Joao Palhinha thumping a deflected finish into the open net after Trafford had clawed the ball away from the feet of Richarlison.

Spurs could easily have increased their lead on the counter-attack via Johnson and Richarlison in the second half despite Micky van de Ven producing a brilliant last-ditch tackle to prevent Phil Foden from tapping home after he was set up by fellow home sub Jeremy Doku.

Spurs are top of the table after two matches, having dumped Burnley 3-0 last week with Frank and Tottenham ending their week on a high after losing out to fierce rivals Arsenal in the race to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.

They host Bournemouth in their final match before the international break next Saturday, with City aiming to bounce back from this defeat with a tricky trip to Brighton 24 hours later.

"We are really pleased. I thought we played really well today, and we built on what we did last weekend. To come here, get a clean sheet and score some goals is perfect," said the Tottenham goalscorer on TNT Sports.

On the difference between the coaching styles of Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank, he said: "Nothing massively. Two different coaches.

"We're really enjoying it and a lot of detail goes into the set-pieces, but at the same time, he gives us a lot of attacking freedom.

"The first few games, we have kept two clean sheets and against Man City it is not easy. I have played here a lot of times and conceded a lot of goals."

Palhinha added: "The coach pushed me to come here and showed me the project he has here at Tottenham.

"It is such a great club, and I am really glad to be in the Premier League again.

"I am so happy, me and my family. Now I want to enjoy this top club and top atmosphere again."

Tottenham end the match with a 2-0 victory over Man City. Well deserved. Impressive showing. Five goals scored, two clean sheets and six points. The Spurs are top of the table. Work to be done by Pep Guardiola and his City side.

A fine double stop by the City keeper to keep out a third goal with efforts from Solanke and Odobert both close to adding some icing to the Tottenham cake.

Surely a done deal for Spurs in this match. Tottenham fans give a standing ovation to Palhinha as he departs the scene to be replaced by Kevin Danso before Spence wins the ball from Silva to repel another home attack.

A lot of the home fans have seen enough. Heading for the exit doors, but Spurs fans are celebrating being top of the league after two matches. No rush home for them.

Spurs could arguably be further ahead in this contest as Lucas Bergvall replaces Mohammed Kudus before setting up Odobert, who drills a finish a yard or two wide. That would have settled it.

Certainly giving off that vibe with Spurs looking and more and more determined not to ship any goals today.

Vicario just making sure that dropped under his bar from the cross to the back post by Ake. Another chance coming and going for the home side. Porro has also picked up a booking for a late one.

On the cusp of a third Premier League win at City in their past five trips to the Etihad. Which is not a bad stat by anyone's standards.

Doku with the run and cutback to pick out Foden, but Van de Van is across to make a last-ditch interception. That is a stunning tackle. Looked like a certain goal. Meanwhile, Wilson Odobert replaces Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke is on for Richarlison.

A big salvage operation in progress here as Rodri and Phil Foden come on for the home side. Oscar Bobb departs the action as Nico Gonzalez also makes way.

Well, that is very unlucky as Romero made contact with the ball without touching the man as Bobb goes to ground. Bernardo Silva with a dangerous free-kick, but Spurs do really well to get that away from with Dias looking to apply the finish. Lewis then hammers a shot miles over seconds later.

The visitors have really taken the sting out of the match in the second half as Kudus superbly wins the ball before Johnson is caught offside. Dias then back to block the pass by Richarlison.

The high press is really causing City some grief after Porro pings another brilliant free-kick into the danger area. Richarlison loops the header onto the top of the net before another Richarlison back-post header just eludes the target. Spurs should really be further ahead here.
