SOUTHAMPTON AND MANCHESTER CITY PLAY OUT GOALLESS DRAW AT ST MARY'S
Manchester City slipped up in their hunt for a UEFA Champions League place, with Pep Guardiola's side failing to beat relegated Southampton.
The match started in predictable fashion, with Manchester City dominating the ball and penning Saints in their own 18-yard box but without much penetration. Guardiola's men managed just one shot on target in the opening 45 minutes and did not look like scoring.
Jeremy Doku was introduced at half-time and he made a positive impact, adding some much-needed pace and directness to City's attack.
The visitors went close to scoring after 64 minutes but for a piece of superb defending from Jack Stephens. Doku did brilliantly down the left-hand side, giving himself space to pull the ball across for Bernardo Silva who rifled an effort that was heading in before Stephens hacked it off the line for a corner.
Southampton continued to defend deep, blocking and clearing everything that came their way, with City putting in 44 crosses.
Substitute Omar Marmoush thought he had won the match for City in stoppage time with a well-struck effort, only to see it crash off the crossbar.
For Southampton, it is a point that takes them to 12, ensuring they will not share the unwanted record of the lowest points tally in a Premier League campaign (Derby County - 11).
For City, it is a result that will give huge encouragement to those around them in the hunt for a Champions League spot, with Newcastle United and Chelsea just two points behind Guardiola's side, while Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are just four and five points off City respectively.
