MAGPIES EDGE INTO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DESPITE HOME LOSS
Newcastle United secured Champions League football despite losing 1-0 at home to Everton on the final day of the Premier League season.
The Magpies needed to win to guarantee a top-five place but were met by an in-form Jordan Pickford.
The former Sunderland goalkeeper produced fine saves in the first half to keep out efforts from Sandro Tonali and the returning Alexander Isak's follow-up. Pickford then saved Sven Botman's effort following a corner.
Eddie Howe had Nick Pope to thank for keeping his side in the game after a wonderful save at full stretch to tip over Carlos Alcaraz's bullet header before the break.
Howe brought on Joe Willock at the break but it was Everton who looked more threatening. They had a strong penalty appeal when Jack Harrison's cross hit Tino Livramento's arm but no spot kick was given.
Pope was called upon again to keep out a low shot from Alcaraz with James Garner heading over from the resulting corner.
David Moyes' side broke the deadlock through Alcaraz's brilliant header into the bottom corner from Vitaliy Mykolenko's cross.
Isak and Fabian Schar spurned chances to score late on but Newcastle finished the season in fifth and qualified for the Champions League on goal difference after Aston Villa lost to Manchester United.

WHAT A NAIL-BITING AFTERNOON
In a season of surprises, Newcastle delivered another after losing to Everton 1-0 at home but sealing Champions League football next season by the barest of margins.
The Magpies began the day in fourth place and welcomed top-scorer Alexander Isak back from injury.
But in a nervy and tense game, they failed to show enough quality and were undone by Carlos Alcaraz's second-half header.
But results went in their favour with Aston Villa losing 2-0 to Manchester United, another turn up for the books.
So Eddie Howe's side end the season in fifth and qualify for the Champions League on goal difference.
It ends an impressive season for Newcastle having won the Carabao Cup to end their long wait for a trophy.
