RAMSEY CATCHES BERNARDO
Ramsey looks to win the ball for Villa, stretching out a boot as a throw floats over his head and grazing Bernardo on the chest with his studs. It’s unintentional and the referee doesn’t believe it’s worthy of further action. VAR looks at it and agrees.

TETCHY ATMOSPHERE
The nature of the penalty decision and the relative importance of this match in terms of outcomes for the season has created a very tense feeling in the Etihad, with the home fans increasingly enraged by every Villa action. Some of that is justified, some less so.

DE BRUYNE DENIED
A clever run by De Bruyne into the Villa box is picked out by an angled cross, and De Bruyne flicks a header on target. But Martinez was well positioned throughout the move and makes a comfortable save.

MARMOUSH THREATENS AGAIN
January signing Marmoush makes a darting run behind the Villa defence and isn't far away from beating Martinez to the through ball. The keeper does well though.

GOAL! MANCHESTER CITY 1-1 ASTON VILLA (MARCUS RASHFORD)
Rashford steps up for the penalty, waits for the keeper to move, and sends his shot the other way to level the scoring at 1-1. Boos ring around the Etihad and a furious Guardiola is booked for his continued protests.

PENALTY!
Referee Craig Pawson is called over to the screen and he sees Ruben Dias catching Jacob Ramsey’s trailing leg in the box with that challenge. It’s fair to say that the Villa player looked for it, but there was contact and the ref agrees with the VAR officials that it’s worthy of a penalty. The screens in the stadium play a replay which prompts fury from the fans, players and Pep Guardiola on the sideline, who are all convinced it’s soft, but the decision stands.

CLAIMS FOR A PENALTY!
City give the ball away sloppily in midfield and Rashford shows his lightning speed with a break down the left. He cuts inside, with his touch turning into a pass for Ramsey to burst onto into the box. He’s caught as he enters the penalty area and goes down, with the referee waving play on. VAR will look at that though.

DANGER SIGNS FOR VILLA
City have stepped up a gear after taking the lead and De Bruyne attempts a clever dinked ball over the Villa defence that is just slightly too heavy for McAtee. That wasn’t far away from being another great chance. Villa need to switch on defensively, and fast.

GOAL! MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 ASTON VILLA (BERNARDO SILVA)
It’s the hosts who take the lead with their first meaningful attack of the game. Marmoush gets to the byline, burning past Cash like he’s barely there, and cutting the ball back into the danger area. It’s Bernardo Silva who gets the shot away, but Martinez will not be happy with his attempted save, getting strong hands to it but succeeding only in palming it onto his knee and into the net. 1-0!

SLEEPY START FROM CITY
Only one team seem to realise this game has started, with City barely even making it out of the blocks yet, with five minutes gone. The same is true of the supporters, who are being comfortably out-sung by the travelling Villa contingent in the opening stages.

OFF THE POST
What a start! Villa very nearly catch City out right in the opening seconds, with Marcus Rashford twisting into space on the edge of the box, shooting across the keeper and seeing his effort bounce back off the post. That shot came after just 18 seconds!

AWAY WE GO
The strains of Blue Moon fade away and the game gets underway in Manchester.
