MARTINEZ STRIKES LATE ON AS MAN UTD SNATCH VICTORY AT FULHAM

Lisandro Martinez struck a deflected winner as Manchester United handed Ruben Amorim an early birthday present with a resilient 1-0 victory at Fulham.

The Argentine defender’s speculative 25-yard effort took a wicked nick off Sasa Lukic that looped over Bernd Leno 12 minutes from time.

It was the visitors’ only shot on target in a match of few opportunities, and lifts The Red Devils – who see boss Amorim turn 40 on Monday – up to 12th spot in the Premier League standings.

Fulham had the better of the first half and went close through Alex Iwobi, but struggled to create much of note following the interval.

The home side had hoped to extend a six-match unbeaten run on home turf, but were thwarted late on as United substitute Toby Collyer cleared Joachim Andersen’s header off the line.

It means Fulham sit in 10th place, eight points adrift of the top five. Improving United are four points further back.

RIO FERDINAND: "There’s character still in there. We can talk about quality and a lack of creativity in that Man United side, but listen, I’ve played here and away games in the PL are tough assignments. Sometimes you have to grind it out and get over the line by any means necessary. Today a deflection, a speculative shot from a centre back goes in and you win the game and get three points.

"It’s not about miracle performances, sometimes it’s about results. Get the points in the bag. United needed to do that and got it today.

KAREN CARNEY: "Fulham were disappointing. They got into the final third of the pitch many times, but they were wayward and didn’t trouble Onana as much as you would have thought with the opportunities they had. But you have to credit man United. The back five was solid, defended well at times and cleared crosses comfortably. It’s a clean sheet for United and disappointment for Fulham."

Manchester United secure only a second clean sheet in 17 matches as they battle to a hard-fought 1-0 win at a previously in-form Fulham courtesy of Lisandro Martinez’s deflected strike.

The Red Devils have now lost just one of their last six games across all competitions to suggest some level of slow progress under Ruben Amorim, who celebrates his birthday (the United boss turns 40 on Monday) with the gift of a third PL away win of the season.
