Brentford 0-0 Chelsea result - Blues draw on the road as they continue push for Champions League qualification

Brentford drew 0-0 at home with Chelsea on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.

Chelsea were looking to keep up the chase for a finish in a UEFA Champions League spot, and with Arsenal’s draw on Saturday, there was an outside chance they may yet be able to steal second place in the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca rested a number of big names, including Cole Palmer, with one eye on Thursday’s match with Legia Warsaw in the UEFA Conference League.

It was the home side who had the best chances, with Yoane Wissa and Keane Lewis-Potter going close in the first half.

In the second half, Maresca introduced Nicolas Jackson in search of a breakthrough goal as Christopher Nkunku was taken off. More changes followed, and Palmer was later introduced with Pedro Neto as the visitors looked for a goal.

Bryan Mbeumo, Sepp van den Berg and Wissa all went close towards the end of the match as Chelsea rode their luck, with neither side finding a way through.

Chelsea ended the game in fourth spot, with Brentford 12th.

Palmer's chance was the last action of the game with the referee blowing the whistle.

Neither side can be too disappointed, as both teams failed to really dominate, and did not create an overwhelming amount of chances.

Both sides need to finish strongly if they are to end the season with satisfaction.

Spinning towards goal on the edge of the box, he lets fly with a shot that is just a few inches over the bar. That's it for the game, almost certainly.

They're being roared on by the crowd but they're keeping their cool, and possession.

More than enough time for someone to find a winner, but they can't waste any chances.

He clips in a trundling, low shot at goal that suggests they're struggling for ideas. Flekken gets down easily for a simple stop.

So far, they've had 58 percent of the ball, but they've not been able to make that dominance tell where it matters most.

This time it's Wissa. The ball is hooked to the striker, just ahead of the penalty spot, and he heads down and wide of the far post, with Sanchez flying in desperation, unable to meet the ball. Brentford have come close in the last few minutes.

A cross comes in from the left, he stoops at the ball unmarked, and he heads down at the ground from a few yards out, only to see the ball bounce over the bar as Chelsea get a huge escape.

It's a chance on the right for Chelsea, theirf fifth of the match. Neto floats one in and it's cleared, with Brentford clearing.

Wissa and Mbeumo break forward and it's the latter who is teed up for a shot, and he drills in a low shot that Sanchez beats out with strong wrists.

The England right-back is likely being protected as he builds up his fitness, and perhaps he will start again on Thursday.

Van den Berg is fouled for a tug on Jackson to stop a counter.

It's a heavy touch, he plays a one-two and receives the ball back on the inside left, and he has an effort beaten away by Sanchez.

The player is then ruled offside, but replies suggest he might well have been on.

He leaves Malo Gusto on the floor, strides into the box, and he swerves the ball away from goal with his cross. Just a touch more calm and he might have set up a team-mate.

That was perhaps the best chance of the half for the home side, and they have struggled to create much in the second period.

Brentford are back up to 11 men, with Chelsea still pushing for the opener.

Neto again, and then a slipping Cole Palmer, aim curling shots at goal that don't beat Flekken. James also has a header, which forces the keeper to fly to his right to beat away.

Collins is down injured in the box and will need treatment after he and Palmer made contact.

Leaning slightly back, Neto curls a shot towards goal from the edge of the box, but it's traveling in towards Flekken, and he puts it behind for a corner. It comes out to Malo Gusto, who blasts over.
