VILLA BOOST CHAMPIONS LEAGUE HOPES IN CONFIDENT WIN AGAINST SPURS
Aston Villa boosted hopes of a place in the UEFA Champions League next season as they moved into fourth provisionally, following a comfortable 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou opted to rest much of the side with their UEFA Europa League showdown against Manchester United in Bilbao on the horizon, though there was positive news as Son Heung-min returned from injury to captain the side.
The South Korean international would go on to create moments of creativity in what ended up being quite an open 20 minutes, with Villa and Spurs both going close to the opening.
The game would eventually tip in the favour of Villa, who grew into the game, with loan star Marco Asensio attempting an ambitious scorpion kick among a flurry of chances.
An opener would be found shortly after half-time as tensions rose, when Ollie Watkins headed a corner across goal in the path of Ezri Konsa to fire Villa into the lead inside 59 minutes.
The home side nearly doubled their lead almost immediately as Watkins saw his effort pushed wide by Antonin Kinsky in the Spurs goal.
Villa’s second would come in the 73rd minute as Boubacar Kamara hammered his effort into the bottom corner to seal the three points.
Aston Villa moved provisionally into fourth place, with Chelsea in action against Manchester United, whilst Tottenham Hotspur’s dismal league form sees them sit 17th.
Next up, Villa face Manchester United at Old Trafford in a must-win game for The Villans on Sunday, May 25. Spurs will be looking to shake off defeat as they face The Red Devils in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday, May 21, before ending their season at home against Brighton on May 25.

"We still have chances to play in the Champions League.
"They [Spurs] competed well and did a fantastic job. We were consistent, demanding and when we scored the first goal, they gave up. Good luck to them in the final.

VILLA EDGE TOWARDS SUCCESSIVE UCL E CAMPAIGNS WITH DOMINANT WIN OVER SPURS
Unai Emery's side headed into their final home game at Villa Park with one mission, which despite a nervy first half of missed chances, was accepted in the second half with a dominant home display.
It took 59 minutes for Villa to grab the opener through Ezri Konsa as chances continued to go begging, with the home side unable to find the target.
But from thereon, things leaned the way of the home side, who continued to dominate and looked worthy contenders for a place in the UEFA Champions League next season, as Boubacar Kamara helped seal their ninth win in 11 games.
Despite boosting their hopes for a top-five spot, much remains in the balance with Chelsea currently in action and still all to play for this weekend.
