Chelsea face paying £5m to send Jadon Sancho back to Premier League rivals Manchester United - reports

Jadon Sancho may be on his way back to Old Trafford this summer, with reports suggesting that Chelsea have the option to pay Manchester United a £5 million fee to opt out of permanently signing the 24-year-old. The winger moved to Stamford Bridge on loan on the final day of the summer window and after initially showing flashes of promise in a blue shirt, he has failed to score since December.

Chelsea will have to pay a £5 million fee to Manchester United if they decide against permanently signing Jadon Sancho this summer.
The winger joined the club on the final day of the summer transfer window on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy between a reported £20-£25m.
The deal was contingent on Chelsea finishing in 14th or above in the Premier League.
Enzo Maresca's side are fourth with nine games remaining, but there are doubts surrounding whether Chelsea want to go through with the permanent signing of Sancho.
But reportedly, a clause exists within the deal that allows Chelsea to send the 24-year-old back to United if they pay the club a £5m fee.
After initially impressing in his first few appearances, Sancho has failed to score in his last 19 games and has not made an assist since January. The winger has just two goals in 28 games for the London club.
With Chelsea targeting another winger this summer and the arrival of highly touted Sporting prospect Geovany Quenda in 2026, Sancho's time at the club may be coming to an end after the current campaign.
Sancho infamously fell out with former United manager Erik ten Hag, with his last appearance for the club coming in August 2023, just two years after signing for £73m from Borussia Dortmund.
After being exiled from training by the Dutchman, he rejoined Dortmund on loan and was part of the side that made it to the UEFA Champions League final in 2024.
His relationship with the club seemed to be on the mend when he came off the bench in the Community Shield at the start of the season, but then joined Chelsea on loan.
United are still covering a substantial portion of Sancho's wages, and he was one of the high-earning players namechecked by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe who are unavailable to play under Ruben Amorim.
Ratcliffe also noted that United are still making outstanding payments on his move from Dortmund, and will still be "buying" the player this summer.
"For Sancho, who obviously now plays for Chelsea, and we pay half his wages, we are paying £17m to buy him in the summer," said Ratcliffe.
Sancho's present United contract runs until 2026 with the option to extend by a further year.
