Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes put in one of his best performances of the season to match the level shown by his team-mates as they grabbed an impressive 2-2 draw at Anfield against Liverpool in the Premier League. Speaking after the match, he said that the team had too often failed to match the level demanded of them, and asked why they waited for Sunday to step up.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said his team "can’t be happy" with the draw at Liverpool and asked "why can’t we do this every week?"
United had chances to claim all three points, with Harry Maguire missing an excellent opportunity at the death which might have turned a 2-2 draw into a shock victory.
Lisandro Martinez had put United ahead early in the first half before goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah shifted the match in Liverpool's favour.
However, Alejandro Garnacho crossed for Amad Diallo to equalise 10 minutes from the end.
As good as United performed, they are in 13th spot in the league, and their showing on the pitch raised questions as to why the players have not put in similar efforts across the season.
Fernandes has come in for criticism at times after some underwhelming performances under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim this season and speaking to Sky Sports, he acknowledged his team’s problems.

"Obviously we've been criticised, and fairly, because the position in the table says it all. We've lost too many points," he said.
"Even today, we can't be happy with the draw because we need points more than they need."
Fernandes went on to point out that the commitment shown at Anfield highlighted previous shortcomings.
"It's a really good result and a fair result, both teams played good football, and it was intense," he continued.
"I'm pretty upset because we can show this against Liverpool at Anfield, first in the league, the outstanding team in the Premier League this season. Why can't we do this every week?"

Fernandes also levelled the same criticism at himself.
"Also, finally I did a proper performance. We said we need much more from ourselves to get more from this season," he continued.
"Being 2-1 [down] then scoring, it's good to get a point, but we need more. Now we have an FA Cup tie at Arsenal, and it is going to be very tough, but we want to get to the final again.
"We know how tough it is to play against Liverpool. Today we put in a real effort to the game. Playing with some passion and heart is what is going to give you something from the game. You have to put in effort and that's why we took something from today.
"It can't stop here. We have to bring this frustration to the next game to understand this has to be the level. If we can do it at Anfield, we have to do it everywhere."
United’s next match is on January 12 against another of the season’s best-performing sides, Arsenal, in the third round of the FA Cup.
