Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham - Premier League result as Mauricio Pochettino’s young guns triumph over sorry Spurs

After striking the first dent in Tottenham’s title hopes in November, Chelsea may have shattered Spurs’ Champions League prospects with a dazzling display to triumph 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Two fantastic free-kicks from England duo Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer set up two superb headed goals for Trevor Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson as a threadbare Chelsea side outplayed their more experienced hosts and showed they’ve not given up on their own European dreams.

Apart from a wave of pressure early in the second half, Ange Postecoglou’s team were distinctly second-best for much of the evening and failed to take the few chances they did create - including a gilt-edged set-piece opportunity for Cristian Romero to equalise.

The result means Tottenham remain seven points behind Aston Villa and now have just one game in hand during a run-in that includes games against Liverpool and Manchester City.

Meanwhile, with the Premier League top seven all in contention for European football next season, Chelsea have closed to just two points behind seventh-placed Newcastle and three behind Manchester United in sixth.

After conceding that foul on Gallagher outside the Chelsea penalty area, Dejan Kulusevki's next foul outside his own box proved even more costly.

He's attempting to make it up to his teammates by winning his own set-piece but Maddison's delivery is harmless.

Spurs are straight back at Petrovic's goal but it's not to be, and Chelsea retain a two-goal lead that now looks decisive.

And Pochettino's just brought on 50% of his outfield substitute options with Premier League experience to make sure of that fact.

Chelsea have weathered that early Tottenham storm at the start of the second half but remain on the back foot as Postecoglou's reinforcements make themselves known.

Kulusevski hacking down Gallagher to ease the pressure doesn't help though.

Maddison's first chance is from the corner, but it turns into a better chance for Chelsea as Jackson breaks free and Van de Ven has to haul him down on the half-way line.

It's the three big names that were dropped from the Arsenal defeat, Maddison, Bentancur and Hojbjerg are all on.

They’ve not turned it into a clear-cut chance yet, but it’s one-way traffic right now. 41% of the half has taken place in the final third for Spurs, and Chelsea can’t find any way to relieve the pressure.

This is a completely different game. As Jackson fails to chase down a Palmer hoof forward, Chelsea's chances are limited to counter-attacks right now while Spurs are controlling possession in the home half, the polar opposite of the first-half.

He had zero touches in the final third in that first-half, but finally Son takes on the inexperienced Gilchrist with a driving run that immediately nets a free kick.

Though it's easily cleared by Chelsea and even springs a counter-attack that Palmer shovels well over the bar, it's much better.

Wow, Tottenham have come out with much more authority this half. They win a corner after Petrovic unconvincingly punches clear, and though it comes to nothing the Spurs press is immediately onto Chelsea.
