That was the 12th goal United have conceded this term. Wow. They let in six last time out against Spurs and their morale must be rock bottom. How they respond is crucial.

It was a fortunate goal, yes, but United were far too open in midfield as Newcastle countered.

GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Man United (Shaw OG): Oh my! Newcastle are ahead after just two minutes! This is NOT the start Solskjaer needed! It's a goal out of nothing as Krafth's cross takes a deflection off Shaw and ends up in the back of the net!

Five minutes until kick-off at St James' Park. It's a big old night for Solskjaer whose side simply must bounce back with a win.

Solskjaer on his midfield pairing of McTominay and Fred: "Scott and Fred are one of the partnerships we've used. They've both got great athleticism and get can around the pitch. That's one of the things we need to improve on, to get a screen of the back four. Last time we were a bit open."

There is still no place in the eleven for Donny Van de Beek, who has yet to make a Premier League start. Fellow new signing Alex Telles also starts on the bench, with Luke Shaw somehow keeping his place in the team. There is no rest for Harry Maguire as he starts at centre-half with Lindelof.
19:30
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes FIVE changes to the Man United team thrashed 6-1 at home to Tottenham last time out. Scott McTominay, Fred, Juan Mata Daniel James , Victor Lindelof are restored to the starting XI, with Paul Pogba dropped to the bench along with Nemanja Matic and Eric Bailly. Anthony Martial is suspended and Mason Greenwood drops out of the squad altogether.
