End of 2nd Half

It’s all over at St James’ Park and Leeds have held on for a 2-1 win that moves them to within a point of Arsenal. Newcastle played really well in the second half and showed enough to give Steve Bruce encouragement… but it’s now five defeats on the bounce for the Magpies and they’ll need to turn those lively moments into something more tangible if they’re to stay out of relegation trouble.

We're into four minutes of added time. Can Newcastle rescue a point?

A corner into the Newcastle box comes back hard off the head of Schar towards his own goal and Darlow does well to keep it out.

A Leeds effort takes a flick off the arm of Lascelles, but there was little he could do about that and VAR doesn’t intervene.

That was nicely handled by Anthony Taylor, who immediately took the sting out of that incident.

Newcastle probably deserve something from this game after this excellent second-half response, but they're running out of time.
83'
Saint-Maximin drives forward again and his hauled down in a dangerous area. Unfortunately Dwight Gayle’s effort from the free-kick isn’t quite up to the standard of the Frenchman’s play to win it, and the ball flies harmlessly over the bar.
80'
Schar storms forward right to the edge of the box and draws an excellent save out of the Leeds keeper with a powerful hit. Wilson can't quite get on the end of the rebound.
78'
Newcastle are bossing this now, playing with what looks like a front four, but there is always that risk of Leeds stretching their lead on the counter-attack. We're set for a barnstorming finish.
75'
Meslier saves well as Shelvey directs a header on target from another Newcastle corner. From the resulting set-piece Saint-Maximin latches onto the clearing header and tries to weave his way back into the box, but handles it in the process and Leeds have some brief respite.
73'
Darlow punches clear after another Leeds counter-attack. Newcastle’s attacking shape will certainly leave them vulnerable to those counters for the rest of this game, but Bruce is desperate for a win so why not go for it.
72'
Saint-Maximin has a crack from the edge of the box but it’s well blocked. There’s so much space in the final third for both teams now, quite the contrast to the drab first-half. And hats off to Newcastle, they’ve been outstanding since half-time.
69'
Saint-Maximin has been so good since he came on and wins a free-kick in a dangerous spot. Schar’s effort clatters into the wall, but when Leeds eventually clear it falls to the same man who tests the keeper with a nice volleyed effort from distance.
68'
Leeds counted in numbers and Darlow takes no chances as he charges out to punch a clipped cross clear, wiping out his own defender in the process. This has turned into a belter of a game.
67'
Lascelles clips the bar with a header from a corner as Newcastle pile on the pressure. They’ve been so much better since the break, but so have Leeds.

Saint-Maximin’s impact is immediate as he turns brilliantly into space and feeds Lewis, who is wide open in the box. He takes his time to line up the shot, but still fires over. Saint-Maximin can barely believe it, and his reaction is nothing compared to that of Steve Bruce on the touchline.
65'
Leeds carve Newcastle open again on the break, but Darlow comes out sharply to cut out a low cross across the box.

That shot is the last involvement for Murphy, and on comes the super-talented Saint-Maximin.

Murphy hits one from distance and his fizzing shot curls fractionally wide. This game has really opened up since the break.
