Everton’s interim manager Duncan Ferguson enjoyed a dream managerial debut this afternoon as his team turned over Chelsea in a raucous atmosphere at Goodison Park.
Just three days ago Marco Silva’s reign as Everton manager reached its conclusion with a dispiriting defeat at Anfield in the Merseyside derby. Ferguson’s temporary appointment lifted the spirits, with the mood transforming to celebratory after this 3-1 victory.

Goals at the start of each half from Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave Everton a two-goal lead, before a brilliant strike from Mateo Kovacic immediately reduced the areas. Everton’s high tempo throughout was exemplified by Calvert-Lewin, who stabbed home the game clinching goal in the 84th minute.
Frank Lampard’s team had the majority of possession but couldn’t convert it into clear-cut chances often enough as they slipped to their fifth defeat of the season. The victory for Everton moves them out of the relegation zone and up to 14th place in the table.
TALKING POINT
Was that a temporary boost or a job audition? In the post-match interview Ferguson played down any talk of taking the Everton job full-time, but such a cathartic victory has dragged Everton out of the pit of despair they were in after the Merseyside derby. One game might be scant evidence but appointing a legendary former player as manager has been an option taken by both Manchester United and Chelsea in the last year. Could Everton be tempted in that direction too?

Under the watchful gaze of Ferguson, the symbolism of Everton’s incumbent number nine turning in an inspirational, match-winning performance was not lost on anyone. Calvert-Lewin occupied Christensen and Zouma all afternoon, leading Everton’s pressing game from the front and crowning his efforts with two well-taken goals.

16’ CHANCE! Calvert-Lewin suddenly gets free from a through ball by Walcott. He has an open look at Kepa from a wide angle, but side-foots his shot straight at the goalkeeper who parries the ball away. He had more time and options there.
49’ GOAL! Everton 2 (Calvert-Lewin 49) Chelsea 0 It's two! Calvert-Lewin challenges for a high ball with Christensen on the edge of the area. They both miss it, the ball ricochets of Calvert-Lewin and then Zouma before dropping perfectly for the striker. From 12 yards out Calvert-Lewin walks onto the free chance and slots the ball under Kepa.
52’GOAL! Everton 2 Chelsea 1 (Kovacic 52) Well, well! This is a stunner from Kovacic. A low cross into the Everton area is reached first by Digne. The ball balloons up into the air and from 25 yards out Kovacic drills a low volley into the bottom corner. This game is very much still on!
59’ BIG CHANCE! Could that have been the game? Walcott escapes from Kante down the right and bursts into the area unchallenged. He has a chance to square it to Richarlison but shoots instead, and Kepa gets a strong hand on the ball to parry it clear.
84’ GOAL! Everton 3 (Calvert-Lewin 84) Chelsea 1 Big Dunc is celebrating again! Chelsea give the ball away sloppily to Walcott. He finds Calvert-Lewin, who finds Davies with a back heel. Davies tries to dance through the Chelsea defence in the area but loses the ball, it breaks back to Calvert-Lewin who stabs a shot at goal that goes through Kepa and into the net!
