Football news - Paper Round: Manchester United eye huge new David De Gea deal, target £50m Sessegnon
Manchester United are reportedly to give David De Gea a new deal and bid for Ryan Sessegnon, while Spurs are monitoring Adrien Rabiot and Everton are considering Marcelo Bielsa.
De Gea wants huge new deal
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is closing in on a new deal at Old Trafford, according to the Mirror. The paper reports that he wants £350,000 a week, which would make him the second-highest player at the club after Alexis Sanchez, who is on £400,000 a week. He currently has 18 months on his current deal, which earns him £200,000 a week, but he feels he deserves more.
Paper Round’s view: De Gea is the best player at Manchester United by some distance, and because of the absolutely dreadful set of defenders in front of him, his position is even more important. At £350,000 a week, he would be a bargain given it would cost at least £70 million in order to find someone even close to his level. The economics make a deal for De Gea the most practical option.
Battle set for Rabiot transfer
Tottenham Hotspur are concerned they will lose out on Adrien Rabiot, reports the Star. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder looked set for a £20 million deal to London before the end of the winter transfer window, but the death of his father prevented any deal going through. The 23-year-old midfielder will now be available for nothing at the end of the season, with both Liverpool and Spanish champions Barcelona interested.
Paper Round’s view: Rabiot is a fine player, but it is definitely time for him to put in some consistent, improved performances. Of course, he will need time to recover from the death of his father, but should he make a move to Liverpool or Barcelona, he will find it harder to break into the midfield of either club than if he decides to join Tottenham Hotspur, who have less competition in the middle.
United prepare Sessegnon deal
Manchester United are monitoring the situation with Fulham’s left winger, Ryan Sessegnon. The 18-year-old forward has been stalling on a deal to stay at Craven Cottage, with the club flirting with relegation. United could offer Sessegnon the chance to play with his footballing hero, Luke Shaw, on the left wing. The club are ready to pay £50 million for the England under-21 international, claims the Express, and he would be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing at the club.
Paper Round’s view: Sessegnon has found it hard to break through into Claudio Ranieri’s first team plans at Fulham and that dissatisfaction could kickstart the collapse of any contract talks. Sessegnon is just 18, though, so he may struggle to get regular minutes on the pitch with Anthony Martial ahead of him in the pecking order at Old Trafford.
Bielsa emerges as Everton target
There could be a shock appointment at Goodison Park. Everton’s hierarchy are planning for life after Marco Silva, who could be sacked if the side does not turn around its current campaign. The Mirror believe that Leeds United’s Marcelo Bielsa is the favourite to be a replacement after his work to get Leeds in contention for the Premier League next season.
Paper Round’s view: Everton claim to want to win trophies, so it is hard to see why they would appoint Bielsa, who has consistently failed to bring in silverware at whichever clubs he manages. His tactics of running young players into the ground is briefly effective, but Everton would probably not enjoy any long-term success if they were to appoint him.
